Yes, even if the hosts policy is free cancellation you are still only allowed 3 per year. If you go over, you are required to pay the service fee. I believe the fine print is buried in airbnb's policy. I found out the hard way but may have had one refunded when I complained about the lack of transparency to the policy.

I get last minute changes and whatnot but most airbnbs aren't some giant corporation but just mom and pop airbnbs. You do really put the host in a bind when the loose cancellation policies are being abused.
If you cancel far enough in advance (more than a month) then I don't see it being a problem as the host will have enough time to re-book. It becomes a problem when someone cancels less than a week before their arrival date, especially during the off-season when less people are traveling.
A lot of people, myself included, book accommodations for trips several months to a year in advance without knowing 100% if those dates will work until the trip is a few months out.
can you load airbnb gift cards into your account and have a 'balance' there until you need to book? Kind of like with amazon gift cards. I don't have anything planned yet but will probably sometime in the next year.
Yes. I do exactly that by loading up on the balance ahead of time for future trips. We have some travels next year and preloaded around $1200 from the BB deal recently. Planning to get more here. BB GC value was higher but Target is easier to spend.

I was just informed via live chat they dropped this policy last year. Anyone else with any insight?
Not sure. I don't remember there being a cancellation limit for guests but there is one for hosts along with a bunch of other penalties, unless they changed that last year.
They limit cancellations even if you are in the cancellation window? I just recently switched back to AirBnb from VRBO but I've already got 3 more stays booked with the partial payment over the next few months. If I can apply these to the rest then I'll pull the trigger on a ton of these. Looks like in the cart you can order 6 and it shows 6 target gift cards.
As far as I know, they don't limit cancellations. I took several long road trips this year and, during my planning, I had to adjust my travel dates due to a variety of reasons, so I had to cancel my existing reservations several times and then re-book. I didn't run into any cancellation limits. As long as you cancel far enough in advance to allow time for the host to re-book then it shouldn't be a problem.
edit: both orders went through. 6 in first order and 3 in the second order. Received all 9 target gcs as well in my target wallet.
Just bought 6 in one order and received all 6 + the target gcs within a few mins. All 6 Target gcs we're automatically added to my target wallet. Bought 3 more but that order is still pending.

after taxes/fees ends up being more $$$ than a hotel. less of a headache if u just go w/ hotel.
Not necessarily. On my last three road trips, 95% of the time I used Airbnb because they were cheaper than hotels, fees and taxes included. And I looked at the budget chains like Best Western and Choice Hotels. Not only were Airbnbs cheaper, they also were nicer, had better amenities (kitchen, washer, dryer), safer and more convenient in terms of location and parking and unloading.
depends on the type of city. i agree airbnb fees have gotten out of hand post pandemic.
and they don't offer any membership points like hotels etc.
also, dislike the 3-4pm checkin, yet the 10-11am checkout. You lose time on both ends. time is money.
medium large hotels, they have the idle rooms to let you check in sometimes at 12pm. The 3 hrs can be huge difference for that first day.
I think it depends on what type of traveler you are and your plans. At 12 PM I'm either on the road driving to my next destination or out doing stuff so I don't have any reason to check in by noon. Also, the chain hotels like Best Western & Choice have check-in times of 3-4 PM and check out times of 11 AM, which are usually the same as Airbnbs, or at least the ones I have stayed in. You can see the check-in/check-out times in the listing before you book so nothing should come as a surprise on the day of your arrival or departure.

With Airbnb you are dealing with humans instead of faceless corporations. I've been able to ask for late checkouts or early luggage drop off etc by directly messaging the host. Worst case they tell you no, but often or not they try to accommodate, especially if the place is vacant during that time.
