That set is their budget set, which are all made in India from what the employee said. The 4 star is their mid tier, made in Germany. You can usually tell by the logo.

I also have this set. Bought it when it came with the free Santoku knife as a promotion from cutlery and more for about the same price. I really enjoy the set. I've added some from other brands that I like for different purposes, but the main few get used often.

No experience with the sharpener.

I've been building my own set a piece at a time, instead of traditional break knife I got the Shun Kaji 7" serrated scalloped utility knife on clearance

You're better off buying the knives you want individually. You almost certainly don't need half of what is in there.
Just the chef's knife, pairing knife, and prep knife alone come to $290+, so even if you don't need the other knives this is a good deal

the Pro or Pro S are better knives, granted not by much if any. It really comes down to handle preference since essentially these three lines use the same blades

So you get 4 German made knives and the rest of the stuff is made in china, no thanks
I mean most people will only use the prep, and pairing knives daily. I have a older cheaper set set of JA Henckels that I still use today but I replaced the chef, prep, and pairing with the Zwilling Pro knives. I just don't see the point in needing to pay up to have a full set of German knives since I maybe use a serrated knife or the other knifes so much less. TLDR, I really don't think it matters if your shears or less knives are Chinese made

Shun's are prone to chipping depending on the use. German steels are softer (below 60 on the Rockwell rating)and a simple honing rod will get them back into shape after using them breaking up carcasses (bones and seafood carapaces). if you are primarily using it to prep veggies and boneless meat then the VG10 perform really well.

Having gone years without even a decent bread knife at home and working in kitchens with bad bread knives, a good bread knife is a game changer. Would absolutely recommend getting one.

why are they "better" if the blades are exactly the same?? asking because i'll get the 4-star if it costs less but is essentially the same.
