If you're going to go through hassle of installing an RO system, at least get 4 stages to include the sediment filter. I have a 5 stage system (no UV light) and it's great, have had it for about 7 years now and parts to eventually fail so I had to replace the tank and the housing for the filters, but still worth it to have excellent water (I use a TDS meter and the city water is about 210-220 where after the RO system, I'm getting 12-14 TDS which is cleaner than bottle water). We use RO water for cooking, coffee, etc and everything taste great.

Lol, illegal. That term is used so liberally. It's against the building codes in some places. As a homeowner one has the right to whatever you want to do within your own home, but at your own risk.

However, if a licensed plumber or contractor were to do something against the code, then they are in violation and may lose their license.

Make sure you get a remineralizer. The ro systems filter out the good minerals too and makes it taste flat to some. Adding a remineralizer adds the good minerals back and makes the water taste much better. drinking RO water can leech some of the good electrolytes and minerals out of you body just like drinking distilled water does.

You get more than enough of those minerals from all the food you eat. I'll take those minerals rather than the ones from China squeezed into a plastic tube. Who knows whats in there.

What about collecting the waste water and re-use it somehow, like watering plants, soaking dirty dishes, washing mops, etc.

I am thinking about installing a RO system, mainly for ultra-sonic humidifiers. My house is so dry right now, and loading/off-loading 5-gal of purified water jugs from stores is getting tiring.

That is an option but I rather stick to traditional water filters

When we bought our house, this was installed for our RO system.

We found out that it was cheaper to install another RO system, then to buy the filters for this. The filters for the system are proprietary and expensive.

The normal 1 year filters are listed on Costco for $40. That's a normal price for RO filters.

I purchased this RO system from Costco once upon a time. It's a decent system, gets the job done, and the faucet is nice; however, I had the hardest time finding replacement filters for it when the time came - such a pain! I suspect you'll find similar sentiment if you look at the reviews of this system.

I ultimately returned this one and installed an APEC system.

You could probably do some of that, but be aware that the waste water is going to contain concentrated amounts of everything you removed from the water you drink, so you could be poisoning your plants with metals, salts, and pesticides.

Would be okay to flush a toilet with, though.

I worry about cleaning of water tanks of these systems. Currently using a Brita and the water container grows greenish stuff every week and whatever I do it always come back. For these systems how to make sure your water tank is free of such contamination?

Green is algae. The tanks aren't see through so no lights can get inside to grow algae. Also, there's less nutrients after the RO which inhibits algae growth. The tanks themselves can be flushed with diluted bleach every couple of years for any possible bacterial growth
