At the start of camping season these sell for full price, $99. When it gets colder they go down to $50, and then can be had on clearance for ~$25 if you get lucky.

I bought two sets at the start of COVID lockdowns for something to do with my kids when i stumbled across them at $25 each. I've never been a camping person and these really helped get me into it. A few observations:

- These are very basic, but all functional. The "4" person tent can only fit two. For pretty much any walmart tent, assume it can reasonably hold half of the stated capacity. They make the capacity estimates based on laying shoulder to shoulder. No room for air mattress or a few inches of margin...

- The sleeping bags are the weakest link. They are plasticy feeling and not very comfortable. They will work, but were the first things I upgraded.

- I still use the chairs and table. I assumed i'd just abuse them until they broke and replace them, but so far they are still trucking along.

- I've replaced the tents (now have a Coleman instant-up 10 person, it's awesome for a family of 4 and crazy easy to setup), sleeping bags (again, just replaced with some basic comfy ones from walmart) and added sleeping pads.

I read all these posts about people needing to get fancy REI gear, but at the end of the day, for a normal family looking to get outdoors, Walmart gear is perfect. Not the lightest, most durable, whatever, but it all works and is very affordable and perfect for car-camping at parks and destinations all-over.

All that said, highly recommend this set for beginners. You'll still need some additional gear, but it really opened up my eyes to how awesome, fun, and affordable camping with my family can be - without having to dump a bunch of money and then risk finding out it wasn't right for us. We've probably done 20+ camping trips since.
Remember. Four person tent is barely big enough for 2 people with their bags inside. Nice deal for a couple camping.
This was a touching post, I must say.

I completely agree. Walmart is great for letting families who cannot afford REI have the same fun. Evens the playing field. If you get to upgrade all the better!! I personally have gotten a lot of wear out of my Ozark Trail things from WM and am happy with them and the prices. $2 pocket knife? $1 mini headlamp? Yep, please! Backpacks, other tools, all worthy.

Anyway, it is the memories of the trip and not the name brands your family will remember.

The posts on this app can get really snooty and some are outright rude. The spirit of it, I thought (I was using the SD website before it was an app), was to share deals to stretch a dollar. If it is not something you want, is it necessary to tear it down? An objective review is one thing - tearing down is another.

Reppppppssss!!

Sweet setup for a couple. Not sure when a basic dome tent became an instant tent though.

This is not an instant cabin tent. It is a dome tent with poles

Not pop up instant, but it is integrated poles with snap to joints, so no threading through a sleeve

Really Good deal for couples or parent+1child car camping. I don't have this tent but the earlier Ozark model and it's still going strong for several years.

It is a Dome tent but it does state:
  • Instant frame technology allows the tent to be set up in just a couple of minutes

Looking at the poles, it appears that it is a variation of the Instant Tent and looks very easy to use. As opposed to the old style poles that is harder to use, especially by oneself.

A similar 28-piece combo is also about half off:
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Ozark-Trail-28-Piece-Premium-Camping-Tent-Combo/650832434?athcpid=6508324... [walmart.com]
Includes: 6-person tent, 1 gear loft, 1 media pocket, 9 tent stakes, 2 sleeping bags, 2 pillows, 2 foam sleeping pads, 2 chairs, 2 dry bags, 2 camp towels, 1 lantern, 1 tent fan with light, 1 backpack, 1 carry-all bag
Seems like a good deal too for those looking.

FWIW, with the extreme caveat that things can obviously change a lot over time -- about a decade ago when I went on a car camping road trip through the southwest, on the first night my truck got broken in to and a bunch of my higher end gear stolen, including my tent. being short on cash (and generally cheap) I went to walmart and resupplied there. quality of some items was hit or miss but I actually loved the ozark trail tent i bought and still use it regularly when I'm not carrying the tent on my back. If I was in the market for a 2-3 person tent (lol @4) for car camping I'd definitely pay this much just for the tent. And this tent looks significantly nicer than the one I bought.

The chairs and table are a nice bonus, again great for car camping and other such uses.

The sleeping bags are likely garbage for camping in any sort of weather but would be good for lounging around the house, kids to use for sleepovers, etc. Your local charity organizations that provide services for people affected by homelessness would very likely be happy to have them this winter too.

This is the perfect setup for those just getting into camping to realize they hate it due to a cheap setup.

I disagree unless it leaks... This setup is for base camping not hiking (I would agree that you would had camping if you tried to hike with this setup).

We bought a similar Ozark Trail package five or six years ago. We absolutely loved the tent and camping. And, although now we probably have $3,000 in camping gear, we still carry it as an emergency backup or for friends to use. It's held up in wind and rain even some of our more expensive tents have struggled with.

So I'd certainly argue this can be a great setup to test out camping. I'd encourage people to learn to setup and take care of their tent, including a ground cover, silicone sealer spray, and seam sealer (as would be appropriate with any tent), but it will likely serve you well for at least a few years until a zipper or pole breaks.
