I use a 27" 1080p monitor for work and have no difficulties with it. The text reading is just fine.

It all depends on how close you sit to the monitor.
1080p/24" = okay @ one arm length
1080p/27" = add another 6-10" viewing distance
This thing is basically a 27" TV screen and you'll hate reading text on such low PPI

What ****p do you suggest for 27inch if you want it for low quality Netflix/office work and $100 budget?

or do I have to spend $150?

weird, I am logged into my EDU account, and its showing $129, so either I missed it, or its not applying to my account. Its showing $129 and it even shows a special discount on the 27" display

I think the reason these 27"/1080p displays are so cheap is because not many people want them.
If it's just Netflix/office work then even a low-end GPU could drive 1440p, so I'd go for that (yeah, price will be higher).
If you want to stay with 1080p for office stuff then stick with a smaller monitor (24") or just sit further away from the 27" one if your desk allows

What's the point of getting a small screen 4k monitor and scale it up to 200%? You basically end up getting the same information with the same screen size.

Even scaled up in windows, the fonts and edges will be drawn at 4K, so they will be twice as sharp as 1080
