are these good for walking running on pavement, or are these more for offroad running?

In for one. Wanted to try 'em but they are rarely under $100.

It's fairly similar to an Arahi, but a little more firm. Great for snow or trails.

They're all terrain. Work great for both, but I prefer to only use them when there's snow or running on trails.

Added, "Fifty States Half Marathon Club - 10% Off" to bring it down to $74.17. Was applied by browser, didn't actually see the code it used.

I have ran 350 miles in the ATR6, 450 in the ATR5.

This is pretty versatile shoe. Works just fine for walking/running for both road and trail. I use this most commonly as a running road-to-trail hybrid, since the lugs aren't that aggressive. This shoe has lasted me quite well until 300 miles; the EVA foam has really packed down, although it lasted longer than the ATR5. The ATR5 was SO soft for the first 80-100 miles, and then crapped out. This ATR6 is definitely firmer, but has that Hoka softness.

However, this shoe really struggles on wet trails. Mud? Forget about it. The lugs are shallow. The outsole durometer is high. But it works great for the Californian winters or mild trails and gives good wear durability on roads.

Overall I'd recommend this shoe. I'm a 10.5 M in most shoes and this was no different, if that helps.

Does anyone have a suggestion on sizing coming from a pair of ASICS Gel Kayano? My hobbit feet will be sad if I get something too tight.
length is the same, but IME the Asics forefoot in general is slightly wider than the Hoka ATR series.

Closest equivalent is Hoka Clifton 6, naturally. It's a good shoe for mild / dry trails.

How are these for running on bark?

There's a 1.75ish mile stretch of bark dust on my half marathon trail (everything else is blacktop), and I can barely finish it in my Bondis, as my knees get super sore.

I'd prefer to just go the route I have, avoiding the bark requires me to run around a busy city block 4x.
Have you tried increasing cadence on the bark section?
The lugs are not aggressive on the ATR series. But I don't think there's a running shoe that excels on bark -- maybe a full-on trail shoe with a MegaGrip (or similar) outsole. But that comes with a weight penalty and MegaGrip wears FAST on road.

I recommend people spend a little more and get the Brooks Caldera 6 for $93 from Dicks. It's a premium tier road-to-trail shoe with better materials and technology than the Challenger. It also has the features people like about HOKA shoes such as a low heel drop, rocker geometry, broad platform, ample cushioning, and a plush heel collar.
