So you could leave your phone at home (to go for a run or bike ride) or your phone's battery could die, and calls and texts and some notifications would go directly to your LTE watch without any bluetooth or wifi connection. This last one is the reason some people are willing to pay a bit more to get a smart watch with LTE/cellular.
