Some of lower priced dongles have to use apps made by people outside their company like veepeak. Bluedriver does their own software. They are frequently compared to Obdlink MX which has many fun things bluedriver does not like quarter mile timing if you are a race enthusiast It sells for $140 right now. What bluedrive does that many do not is that you can request it to do a full scan on the car which includes engine, transmission, antilock brakes and air bag errors. With many lower priced scanners they only show the engine. By catching my transmission error of p1811 early I was able to install a $30 kit to avoid a transmission death. My trans is 234K old where I have heard others die as early as 70K. I like bluedriver for watching when I have to get the car smogged it tells me all of the parameters are met before I go in so I am not refused. I put bluedriver on my amazon fire 10 and the graphics show up super nice and very big. When I bought it you could only graph 4 things at once in color. Recently they added 5 things in a free update. To me that is worth 50 more dollars. They also give suggestions with error codes of what to check for. Some suggestions are very thorough and others not so much. Personally I think it is a good value. If you don't like it from Amazon you can send it back up to Jan 31. My $.02.
https://us.bluedriver.com/pages/compatibility will tell you what it will support.
Does this have any added benefits from regular OBDII scanners that go for like ~$20?

Thanks OP! This has been on my wish list for over a year. Some minor deals but nothing this big. Bought this in a heartbeat!
I hope it works for you. Sometimes alldata and mitchell wiring have sales on their sites for your car if you are interested in going deeper with your diagnostic.

Yes,
I use OBDLink MX+ with torque pro, Carista, inCarDoc Pro, and my favorite is "Car Scanner" (this app shows a lot of information about car).

With "Carista" and "Car Scanner" you can see TPMS (tire pressure)
Welp I guess I'll just wait for that to go on sale then. Thank you for the follow-up.

Glad to help. Sometimes alldata and mitchell wiring have sales. Take a look at enthusiast sites for your car sometimes they have had the same problem or even the wiring diagram. Saving money is good.

My girlfriend's kid wants to be a mechanic but his current car is a 2001 BMW. Does the 2005 or newer model only apply to the enhanced diagnostics or will the reader essentially be worthless on his model vehicle? I still think there would be value as he'd likely be working on all kinds of different cars, but just wanted to get something that would be useful to him now too.
If you want to look up his make and model and see what Bluedrive has to offer here is their compatibility site:

Did this work on 2023 Nissan Leaf and is it useful?
I want a scanner to connect to LeafSpy app. I also have other vehicles that this could be useful in but primarily looking for Nissan Leaf.

This is supports OBD2 Enhanced Diagnostics - car manufacturer specific codes. This is not a cheap $20 OBD2 only reader. I have both. Recently for my 2009 c300 the cheap one said engine bank too lean, misfire on 4 and 2. Misfires can be caused by so many various issues. The bluedriver said intake manifold flap failure - which was the issue.

This scan tool isn't for calibrations. Calibrations should be done with a factory tool and its software e.g. Techstream for Toyota, VAG for VWs etc because with very few exceptions those modules that accept calibrations rely on dealer-level data to transfer to onboard ECUs. Modifying window roll-up is a minor mod...but even that kind of tool is pricey (look at Autel's line-up or Xtool D7/8s) because the module has to allow two-way coms from/to the tool. So unless you know someone who knows someone who's used an aftermarket tool successfully, I'd steer clear -- be concerned about the ability to modify and the stability of the modification -- you "brick" a tranny or engine ECU and you're looking at serious $$$ or maybe even buying a vehicle. But there are plenty of online helpful forums specific to most car/truck makes/models where you can find specific combos of aftermarket tools that work with factory software.
that makes sense, very helpful post thanks!

I think because its the only one that works with their app. So really it depends how robust their app is. They would of had to input all the possible codes for each manufacturer. Also there is no way the app can detect your car make and model so i assume you have to manually enter that like every other app.

I have one of these scanners and it actually does detect your make and model, even the VIN of your car. If it finds any codes, it will given you suggested fixes based on previous users, and sometimes a direct.link to an online store who sells the part. You can use it to do real time diagnostics on your fuel system to detect if it's a problem with say an O2 sensor or a vaccuum leak. It has saved me tons of cash by being able to fix things on my own, and also saved me from buying a very badly misrepresented vehicle from a dealership. I never let any of my friends buy a used car without using this tool during a test drive!

have this - have loaned it out a few times only to have those people tell me they bought one of their own. i've tried it on a broad mix of vehicles and haven't found anything it's lacking. on the vehicles i tried - it pulled SRS and ABS codes which cheap scanners usually don't do. i got my first one about 5 years ago (lost one gave one away) and the products/app/updates have not disappointed me. is it as good as a big money subscription based scanner - no...but it's the best <$300 unit i've seen and head and shoulders above the other $100 units i've seen

I believe OBDLink MX+ OBD2 has Enhanced OEM support like for certain cars, OBDLink MX+ provide live TPMS info like real time tire pressure which almost no other OBD2 device provide (since those are not part of normal OBD2 info).

Does anyone else know what other OBD2/device provide real time tire pressure for Toyota Prius/Corolla, etc?
Scangauge does but its not BT.

It didn't detect my transmission problem on my 2003 BMW M3 when I had it, so yeah kind of useless for him.

That's the protocol most of these use. ELM themselves went out of business a few months back, but their communication layer is used in lots of products. BlueDriver does not use the ELM327 protocol, though.
interesting, good to know. thanks
