Some of lower priced dongles have to use apps made by people outside their company like veepeak. Bluedriver does their own software. They are frequently compared to Obdlink MX which has many fun things bluedriver does not like quarter mile timing if you are a race enthusiast It sells for $140 right now. What bluedrive does that many do not is that you can request it to do a full scan on the car which includes engine, transmission, antilock brakes and air bag errors. With many lower priced scanners they only show the engine. By catching my transmission error of p1811 early I was able to install a $30 kit to avoid a transmission death. My trans is 234K old where I have heard others die as early as 70K. I like bluedriver for watching when I have to get the car smogged it tells me all of the parameters are met before I go in so I am not refused. I put bluedriver on my amazon fire 10 and the graphics show up super nice and very big. When I bought it you could only graph 4 things at once in color. Recently they added 5 things in a free update. To me that is worth 50 more dollars. They also give suggestions with error codes of what to check for. Some suggestions are very thorough and others not so much. Personally I think it is a good value. If you don't like it from Amazon you can send it back up to Jan 31. My $.02.
https://us.bluedriver.com/pages/compatibility will tell you what it will support.
Does this have any added benefits from regular OBDII scanners that go for like ~$20?

Glad to help. Sometimes alldata and mitchell wiring have sales. Take a look at enthusiast sites for your car sometimes they have had the same problem or even the wiring diagram. Saving money is good.
What do you mean by enthusiast sites for your car ?

If you're looking for an upgrade from Torque Pro, look elsewhere...

My girlfriend's kid wants to be a mechanic but his current car is a 2001 BMW. Does the 2005 or newer model only apply to the enhanced diagnostics or will the reader essentially be worthless on his model vehicle? I still think there would be value as he'd likely be working on all kinds of different cars, but just wanted to get something that would be useful to him now too.
If you have that vintage of BMW and have access to a laptop you are better off buying a cheap VAG-COM USB cable and installing the BMW INPA or ISTA software. You will have dealer level access for sub $10. You can read and diagnose everything.

The USB cable is good for other vehicles, but software is highly vehicle specific.

What do you mean by enthusiast sites for your car ?
Some car repair sites for different makes and models:

GM makes with the 3.8L 6 cylinder have one called 3800Pro.

XBimmer is a BMW forum for repair. I haven't been there.

Yodatech for Toyota 4Runners and Tacomas.

Look up your cars engine and model and search for a forum that may give you repair help. I found some good advice at Bob is the oil guy.

Let us know if you find a good repair forum for your car.

Exactly, thats why I returned Bluedriver and bought OBDLink MX+ for $100 on sale.
OBDLink MX+ have many more options, and you can use different apps, but with Bluedriver just one.
Can you share where and when OBDLink MX+ was available for $100? Thanks in advance!

Yes,
I use OBDLink MX+ with torque pro, Carista, inCarDoc Pro, and my favorite is "Car Scanner" (this app shows a lot of information about car).

With "Carista" and "Car Scanner" you can see TPMS (tire pressure)

Would you happen to know if any of the apps you mentioned could help with my tpms problem. My tpms light illuminates after about 10-20 min of highway driving almost every time. Do you know if it would detect a faulty sensor and tell me which one it might be? Thank you.

You can try this: once you see the warning light, you can use Carista or "car scanner" app to scan tpms sensor for the tire pressure and if one of the tire does not show pressure that meant that sensor is bad..

It was approximately 1year ago. I bought it from OBDlink web site. I sign up for their promotion email. I later received email that it's on sale. It was some king of holiday that day.

Just monitor their site on different holidays, like Chinese new year and so on...
