Which brand's shoes are more sturdy and comfy? Columbia or Merrel?
I think Merrell has a better reputation as a shoe maker.

Thanks, OP, was waiting for a deal on the Moab 2 Goretex hikers. Stacked this deal with 10% CB using my Capital One QuickSilver Visa, so a pair of these comes up to $64 after CB. Nice deal!

Bought the Merrell MOAB waterpoof ones. First time out in light rain/drizzle, 1.5 mile walk, top of socks and toes wet. Not waterproof.
Not enough info based on the apparent scenario you're describing. It sounds like you were wearing shorts or had pants that were not wicking rain away. If socks were wet and soaked; they can very well soak the whole sock over time.

Not saying the shoe didn't work as proper, but your experience leaves open to concern about if the shoe was the problem or not.

I like Merrell, but I've not purchased any Columbia shoes yet.

I did have to return a recent Merrell Alverstone waterproof shoe that didn't meet my quality standards. Shoe fit and felt fine but was noisy walking around the house in them. Insole was subpar in construction.

Looking for another WP shoe; not ruling Merrell out though.

For what situations would you get hiking shoes instead of trail running shoes?

The Alverstone while good are more entry level. The Moab have vibrum soles and are a bit higher quality.

Moab 2 have absolute crap traction on wet rocks. Like it's very dangerous. I walk my local stream all the time and I have fallen in the stream while wearing these, absolutely slippery on wet rocks, so if you plan on using them for actual hiking they are terrible. For any other use, like around town or I use them for biking, they are good. But the slippery rocks makes me want to throw th away

Terrain type, duration and load will help determine what you need.

Trail runners are perfect for light to moderate difficulty trail for a day hike carrying minimal weight. The main negative, at least for me was that on rougher parts of the trial I could feel every rock and stick pushing through the sole. My feet were done after a 7 mile moderate hike in them. On the plus side trail runners are light, breath well and have good cushioning.

Hiking shoes like the Moab will have a tougher sole with a shank to minimize feeling rocks and stick pushing though your sole. They are also tougher on the uppers to take more abuse and can provide more support. On the down side while not heavy they are heavier than trail runners and don't breath as well. These can be used on anything to include harder trails carrying heavier loads.

There are also shoes that are considered hybrids between the two. The Merrell Moab Speed (also on sale) are a bit beefier than trail runners but lighter than a traditional hiker like the Moab 2.

Hope this helps.

Any idea what's the big difference between GoreTex and other?
I know Goretex has 2 layers for waterproof but still unsure if it's worth it.

If you go in wet areas or hike spring or fall then yes. If you are mostly dry and hike summer then the ventilator version would be better. But it is very personal and people will swear by one or the other.

Ordered a pair of the Moab 3 from woot the other day for $73. Several reviews say the 3 runs slightly smaller and I ordered the same size, might keep them - we'll see. but just got 2x more Moab 2, Most comfortable shoe I've ever worn.. Good call on the capital one 10% CB.
