Textnow doesn't give the option to delete previous text messages. Kinda weird.
For anyone unfamiliar you must use Textnow's app for all your absolutely free calling and texting. Cellular data is sold separately and is never free. You'll need an Android or iOS device to run the Textnow app.
You'll be a given a new phone number when you sign up. If you don't use the service for awhile you lose that phone number. They'll give you another different phone number when you return to using the service. If you want to keep your same number forever without restrictions I beleive there is a one time fee to get that done.
Trying to remember which network the free SIM runs on. Either way if you have an unlocked phone this is a great freebie to use as a backup phone. All the calls and texts are over LTE wireless via the Textnow app. The app has advertisements of course.
Textnow is just fine for every day use despite the occasional ad playing when you end your phone call. The ad banner in the texting window is bearable. It's a free SIM and a free app for completley free calls and free texting with a free signal from a cell tower. While google voice is nice they don't offer a free SIM with free cell service as can be had in this deal. Google voice you're either on wifi or you are paying for cellular data in some fashion. If junior just needs to call mom to pick him up from soccer practice and send texts to his friends this deal is perfect.
Got this service and added it to one of my Gmail 2fa, tried to get the verification but now they want you to pay the service fee for those short 2fa messages. Now can't access unless I pay, that's how they'll get you!

I lost my 2 previous TextNow phone numbers from lack of use. Don't know the terms but I think you need to make a call more than once a month. Getting texts won't count towards this requirement.

work with existing account that does not have a sim?
Yes. Any TextNow account can sign into the app and it should work just fine. At least this was the case when I gave it a test drive earlier this year. You could even use multiple TextNow accounts with the same SIM on the same phone, just not more than one at a time.

and their app comes with lots of ads too, so definitely not an option for everyday use.
for that, i'd recommend google voice

It may however work in Canada once/if you have the SIM.
