Alright so would something like this be good for family portraits? Just staining in front of the tree or something? There is unfortunately too much stuff for me to learn and too many opinions out there lol will this be better than an iPhone camera

Unless you plan on picking up photography as a hobby or profession you're better off with your phone. I'm a professional photographer and use a camera much better than this. From what you described this camera would just collect dust. Now if someone was interested in learning photography this is a nice entry level camera…it would make a nice Christmas gift

Honestly I'd pass on this deal. This is a Micro Four Thirds (MFT) camera. MFT is kind of a dead format, there is very little going on in the MFT world mostly because there are far more compelling camera mounts. Go with a Sony or Canon system they are far more robust and feature rich cameras and actually have a future.

Thanks appreciate it. I have looked up some info on Reddit discussing option but it always ends up "well then you want this lens for his and then that lens for that and yea it's $2000". Just want something for simple home use of my kid but a lot of feedback is if you're not 100% serious into this and want to do it full time then don't even bother

It's not gatekeeping. It's reality. If you aren't going to take the time to learn how to use the camera and edit the photos afterwards, then your phone is likely going to take better photos with all of the AI enhancements they do these days and you will be unhappy with a dedicated cameras results.


If you want to spend time and actually learn about photography and spend time editing then a dedicated camera will be better.

So if you had a family member who needed a new laptop and said they just want to browse, use excel some as well as video calls you would tell them "if you aren't going to take the time to learn how CPUs are different as well as different speeds of ram and the different hard drives you might as well just use the free computers at the library"?

You asked if it will be better than an iPhone if you don't want to learn.

I'm not a pro, just a hobbyist and I 100% agree with this. I have in the past seen many friends buy DSLRs only to never use them because they are inconvenient or didn't bother to learn how to use it other than the auto dial. This basically made their photos look flat and bad. Anyone who doesn't want to learn the basics of photography and use editing software will just be wasting their money on a dedicated camera. The smart phones with their computational AI will give you a very good end result. The only drawback to phones are the lower resolution which makes printing photos not so nice.

Even printed photos isn't terrible - most paper prints are 300 DPI, so you could go up to a 11x14 with little to no quality loss on a 12MP phone. Canvas is usually between 100-150DPI so a 30x20 would be fine.

This micro 4/3 is only 16MP anyways so it's not a huge step up in resolution.

I use my Canon M5 setup all the time when traveling, but I also spend hours in Lightroom when I get home whereas my iPhone photos are generally just me hitting "auto" on the photoshop iOS app and gets me acceptable results, if it even needs editing.

For what it's worth. Been a professional photographer since 1982. Editorial, corporate, studio and finally textbooks. Interior family group shots are tough. Good light is the key to getting that image of Uncle Lou dressed all in black while your young cousin is moving around.

Yes a good smartphone even an old iPhone 5S will do great family photos with good light. It's light that makes the image good. An OLD point and shoot with flash will take GREAT photos compared to an iPhone 1? PRO inside with a group especially with dark clothes and people moving.

Know your subject and the environment. I would not go with anything that requires you to learn if this photo is happening soon. Enjoy the subjects and use your phone or a real simple point and shoot.

Don't get oversold on tech.
