I swear, when they come out with a newer version of this, no one will be able to get one for years.

Easiest the best streaming player in existence - and I've tried them all. Reliable, stable, consistent and still gets updates years later.

My Amazon HD Music on the Shield reports a lower bitrate than played through Heos on my Denon sadly. I'm curious how other people are playing lossless?

It's also nice to play PC games on a local machine streamed through Moonlight even with HDR, but the Android OS seems to only handle 4 Bluetooth controllers. If you want 8, you'd have to opt for a PC or console

I used to think that of my Shield boxes but they've gone downhill over the years. First issues I'd have with them was the random power on not working and it requiring me to unplug and replug in the units at least once a month. Then they started making changes to the UI and making it more of an ad driven experience on the Home Screen. And no matter how many times we've told it to disable suggested movies, it keeps coming back after rebooting the device. The only reason it still gets any use in our home is because the Mrs. loves the triangle shaped remote. I prefer to use the Apple TV with the newer remote design.

It's old enough now to be in first grade, at least.

I have one and it certainly is the best in comparison to the fire stick or any other streaming device.

Only annoying thing is the ads they place on the home screen. and sometimes its slow to start now

Any news if there is a new Nvidia Shield Pro in the works?
I doubt it. Nvidia probably reads the fanboy comments for this old technology and concludes it doesn't have to update anything. Good thing Apple (iPhone) and Google (Pixel) are always trying to improve their technology with advancements. It also results in the older technology lowering in price.

Most people that use a shield are pro A/V users and usually don't care about the lack of YouTube HDR or upcoming (not even mainstream) streaming codecs, streaming at variable bitrates is trash imo. I run a dedicated 50tb Plex server and only feed the shield uncompressed remux 4k blurays with uncompressed Atmos metadata. The shield doesn't hesitate in the slightest. It pases all the Dolby Vision and HDR10+ video and DTS/Dolby codecs to my Denon receiver without issue. It's free of a lot of bloatware and telemetry trash that Amazon loads into it's devices. To top it off Nvidia still supports even their oldest shield player with regular software updates. I've tried numerous streaming devices over the years, even running a dedicated HTPC, the shield being able to handle uncompressed streams solidifies it as the current best device. If you don't care about video quality or audio quality, an apple tv or built in TV apps will do just fine.
Why would I want this over an Xbox One S? I run atmos and HDR on an onkyo receiver....I am big on YouTube but not into the file server aspect.

I just want to know why this is better ....

The Shield is no longer King, get over it.

Amazon is adding TrueHD and DTS-HD to the 3rd gen Cube, and it has

AV1 support
VP9.2 HDR, and HDR10+ support
WiFi6E
Hands free voice control
30-35% faster CPU
IR blaster
HDMI in
30% cheaper

Why give Nvidia your money for outdated tech? Deprogram yourself, and buy based on specs not on brand loyalty.

This doesn't exist yet lol. Also Alexa sucks. Google is the superior platform and integrates better for folks that have Google Home devices. Didn't Amazon just say it was drawing down it's investments in Alexa? Lmao.

These things are 7 years old at this point. They have the same chip as the Nintendo Switch. There have been quite a few leaks about the chips Nvidia is making for the next Switch lately, and will probably release sometime next year. I imagine the new Shield won't release until after the Switch.
LOL same chip as the Nintendo switch. Phone now are better than both.

What ads? I have been using this for years and barely noticed any ads. The best $200 I spent. I occasionally game on it but most of the time just streaming videos. I also own apple TV and Amazon fire stick. I don't remember where they are now

This device can easily play VC-1 codec videos. Chromecast and Firestick cannot. Keep that in mind if you're on the fence and have a large library of remuxed movies. It can also play DV MEL and FEL, but cannot play HDR10+. If you need to stream anything to it (Netflix, HBO, etc), this is the best of the best. If you only play local files and need full compatibility with every format (including audio) and don't want Nvidia's AI image "enhancing" distorting your videos (If you have an eye for this, it's very noticeable), I'd recommend a Zidoo Z9X or if you can find a decent priced OPPO 205.

They aren't 7 years old. The current version was released in 2019 so it's 3 years old.
