I swear, when they come out with a newer version of this, no one will be able to get one for years.

Easiest the best streaming player in existence - and I've tried them all. Reliable, stable, consistent and still gets updates years later.

Does this player run better than a TV with built in Google TV? I just bought a TCK 4k Google TV and the interface seems to run pretty smooth. Just wondering if getting this would really kick it up a notch. The TV does have Dolby Vision and Atmos too.

I have both shield pro $180 was 3 yeara ago during BF. And apple tv 2nd gen , bought 1 year ago

For local contents. Shield pro is the best. Can passthrough everything mostly

I do nit having issue woth shield… as you mentioned. There is a "beta" feature to match frame rate from the source *need to check again*
Color space and glitch not really. This shield pro .

One random issue, if the source is DV, sometimes the color space is away off. The solution is turn off my home theater and turn back on. Not sure this is receiver or shield or my P65 2nd gen vizio.

Love apple tv UI and smoothness for UI and online streaming. But playing local files are No bueno.

I have 2 fire tv. 1st and 2nd gen. 1st is giving me. Headaches. Slow and sometimes crashing. 2nd model seems ok , will see if going to the same path of my 1st gen or not

Chomecast 1gen and 4k hahha. 1st gen is choking a lot when streaming . 4k is ok but replaced by Apple Tv 2nd gen ( away better thab chromecast 4k).

This is just me, seeing tendency android tv is getting slow gradually when they push updates or security patches.

surprisingly nvida shield pro that I got 3 years ago, does not having the same symptoms. So far at least 5 updates from nvidia🤣. And they still support their products

One feature that i can not find. Nvida AI upscaler is very good, especially watching pre 4k old series. I compared with firetv 2nd gen and chromecast 4k including apple tv 2nd gen. Nvidia AI upscaler is the best as i know.

Just my experience

We have iphone and ipad in our family. So far ok. Our old iPhone was. SE 1st gen to iphone 12. Actual still keeping 4S, but some apps that i want not running in the old IOS🤧…

The oldest still usable in our family is ipad air 1st gen. Surprisingly the battery health still good enough
The problems with the shield are reality; i have a 2019 pro. They don't however take away from its strengths entirely. If you need lossless atmos streaming from a NAS and stellar upscaling for lesser quality sources, it's a VERY good unit.

I stand by however that it's not the BEST player if all you do is stream from apps - ATV (especially newer Gen) wins hands down.

The argument is use dependent but to each his own Smilie

Amazon has announced that the 3rd gen Cube is being pushed an update to enable DTS, DTS-HD, TrueHD, so wrong again. But keep pretending the Shield is the only game in town
Uh, no, Amazon did not announce this. One support agent told one user that this feature is coming. If you've ever dealt with Amazon technical support, you'd know to take this claim with an entire shaker of salt. Since literally no one has actually been able to use the claimed new feature in the supposedly released update, and the claim is only a few days old, perhaps wait and see if Amazon actually follows through before you berate other people over a feature that doesn't even exist yet. That's a good way to end up sounding like a fool.

That said, I hope you're right, and I hope Amazon extends it to other devices, like the 4K Fire Stick or Max. Having a mainstream manufacturer adopt bitstream passthrough could help drive the whole market in that direction.

Still rocking the 2017 pro and it's still rock solid. When the game remotes went bad out of warranty, Nvidia sent me two brand new ones just for asking nice.
Excellent product with tight quality control, and good value for the money. I know there's no buy it for life technology, but this is one of those rare occasions where the product is truly worth what they're asking for it. I'm half a decade into the purchase and going strong.
Great deal.
One question. How do you got remote replacement?
Mine: power button is easy to get stuck…

Thanks

Stable? laugh out loud Android TV is buggy as hell and ad ridden.

The only reason to buy one of these is if you need local/network playback. But if you're into that kind of thing, you already know that by now and probably own one already.

If you just want streaming, the Apple TV is by far the better device and costs a lot less.

I love the Brand "Loyalty" debates going back and forth, seems that this "Shield debate" should rank right up there with Politics and Religion.

Yes, I am a long time shield user with several of them. I run a Plex server and it handles that very well.

I can conceed that other devices, IMHO, perform better with specific Apps. I also have the ATV 2021 version, FireTV cube 2nd gen, Roku's FTV Sticks, Chromecasts etc.

Each one has it's pros and cons and I for one don't really think there is any one device that is a "Best thing since they put pockets on Teeshirts" "Best of all time" all in one solution. YMMV. Sure the shield can do everything but does it do EVERYTHING better than all the rest?, In my experience, no.

The ATV is more snappy in response, the interface is simple and it just works when I need it to.
The FTV Cube is full of ads but it also just works

The Shield runs my Plex server and my HDHomerun DVR and it does this very well.

I personally don't feel the need to be the "Smartest Person in the room" about it but for a person that runs a plex server, uses apps and plays an occasional emulator, the shield checks those boxes but I do use the ATV and FTV depending on what I want to watch.

I do not have a "State of the art" cinema/sound system and don't consider myself an expert or music snob, I enjoy a good picture and decent audio, so for those looking to have the best visual and audio experiences, you have my respect and I defer to you.

Not wanting to start a long drawn out debate with anyone on this because I believe it's a matter of chice and I don't feel the need to convince anyone but myself.

FWIW, the last updates on the shield were and continue to be a problem, this changed my opinion on the shield. I had to roll back to 8.2.3 and believe me, that was not fun.

As long as a device fits your needs, you are golden.
The only device with my criteria as home theater is passthrough and only shield can do as today.

I have collections of chromecast, firetv, apple tv, and chines tv box thar flashed with corelec🤣.
Mostly collected dusts . Shield pro, 2nd firetv and apple tv 2nd gen are my main driving currently

Shield is ok to me… 🤣

Really want to know how this rises above an Xbox One S?

I mostly stream youtube, twitch, and the normals. I don't run a NAS. I have an Onkyo and atmos speaker setup. I do have a 4k HDR TV.

What benefit would this give me?

Just look on amazon for shield remote. Original goes for about 30 bucks and there are some cheaper options as well....not sure how well they work though. I've ordered the 30 bucks one and has been working fine with the og shield device.

Saving monies? Keep what ever you have now

If you play mostly through nas or local, shield pro is the best based on my experience

I just googled for their customer service email and sent an email that basically said....

"Hey it's totally not your fault and I'm out of warranty, and I'm definitely going to buy a new shield when they come out either way .
But, would you guys mind to replace my controllers that quit working a month out of warranty?"

They emailed back with instructions and sent me a shipping label.
They were totally about just being fair with me.
It was great.

I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned, but another perk of the Shield for those that have Google Assistant devices is that you can both control the Shield by voice (turn on shield, raise the volume, fast forward 30 seconds, play x on Netflix, etc..) and control other smart devices with your shield remote.

Cheaper options don't work that well. The replacement Nvidia remote is fantastic in comparison.

This is pretty dead on. I have Shield TV that I use only for Plex and game streaming. Other streaming services are far better through the Apple TV. The consistency of system-wide behavior between apps (including framerate matching, dynamic range matching, etc) is just so seamless on the Apple TV. But for Plex, the bitstream passthrough, AI upscaling, and snappy interface is much better on the Shield TV. It's probably overkill to have both, but I found a used 2019 Shield for super cheap, and it's been well worth it.

I used to enjoy all the freedom of android until I got older. Now all I want is something to work without making me do additional work. So I switched to apple. Can't say it's perfect. But at least I know it will work. And mind you I still use a windows laptop
