I swear, when they come out with a newer version of this, no one will be able to get one for years.

Easiest the best streaming player in existence - and I've tried them all. Reliable, stable, consistent and still gets updates years later.

Nothing like paying 180 bucks to deal with ads on the home screen and on your remote 😐
They are not ads. They're called promotions. It means they're showing you stuff that you could watch. I might be splitting hairs.

Nowhere near as offensive as Amazons interface. But certainly not as clean as Apple TV 4K.

But it's not like there are ads telling us to buy tampons and diarrhea medicine :-)

ATV would be a good choice for many, especially with infuse. But some codecs not natively supported… like truehd atmos. Shield pro does That natively. For those who use Plex, I Never had problems with any file I threw at it.

Am I the only one who's thinking that the addition of DTS HD and true HD
Passthrough, and that means the immersive audio DTSX and atmos too, Is basically going to put a nail in the coffin of the shield Pro by fire TV cube 3rd generation?

Edit:. There was an article on FTVnews and verified to exist

The Shield is no longer King, get over it.

Amazon is adding TrueHD and DTS-HD to the 3rd gen Cube, and it has

AV1 support
VP9.2 HDR, and HDR10+ support
WiFi6E
Hands free voice control
30-35% faster CPU
IR blaster
HDMI in
30% cheaper

Why give Nvidia your money for outdated tech? Deprogram yourself, and buy based on specs not on brand loyalty.

I have the 2020 pro edition and while it is great and offers a lot of value it also creates some headaches, i.e. it doesn't turn off the tv after pressing the off button multiple times, it doesn't respond to the controls right away, it has little storage, and it doesn't accept flash drives as external storage. It also doesn't have IR so you can't just use a normal universal control, you need one that has Bluetooth. Other than these problems I like it.

But the updates can definitely break it for years. I'm at the point where it's stable but after having the sound cutting out problem for a year after one update I now look at the official forums and check for weeks if the updates break things, and sadly There's lots of problems there. So it is amazing, but man it will really frustrate you sometimes.
How did you fix it? I've been having this issue and haven't been able to figure it out.

the price should be $100? yes or no? :-P
Who downvotes this comment? No wonder they keep the price inflated.

It's too old to be at this price point still. I'll wait until a new Android powerhouse is released.

I find xbox/ps blueray experience frustrating, I freaking don't know why I have to upgrade blu-ray player app from time to time when I want to enjoy some timeless master piece.

Most people that use a shield are pro A/V users and usually don't care about the lack of YouTube HDR or upcoming (not even mainstream) streaming codecs, streaming at variable bitrates is trash imo. I run a dedicated 50tb Plex server and only feed the shield uncompressed remux 4k blurays with uncompressed Atmos metadata. The shield doesn't hesitate in the slightest. It pases all the Dolby Vision and HDR10+ video and DTS/Dolby codecs to my Denon receiver without issue. It's free of a lot of bloatware and telemetry trash that Amazon loads into it's devices. To top it off Nvidia still supports even their oldest shield player with regular software updates. I've tried numerous streaming devices over the years, even running a dedicated HTPC, the shield being able to handle uncompressed streams solidifies it as the current best device. If you don't care about video quality or audio quality, an apple tv or built in TV apps will do just fine.
Not all of the DV data because it lacks the second video encoder required to play it properly, but it's the best you can get for Plex with lossless audio.

For streaming video it certainly is. Power draw is much less at idle and while streaming, especially important for an always on device. My 2017 Shield never really ticks over 5 watts under any use case. Obviously if gaming or Blu-ray is of any interest it's not worth it.
Right, the xbox one x is about 11 watts. so at 8 watts difference that's about 80KWh per year or, at a nominal rate of 15 cents per KWh is almost $12 per year saved by using the shield over the xbox!!!

Implying I rip anything lel. I am a software engineer by trade, building and maintaining enterprise servers and network appliances is a hobby of mine. I have a home theater in my basement, full 7.2.4 atmos setup and an 83'' Sony A90j and a 120'' drop down screen when we have numerous people over. Quality is paramount because you can actually see artifacts on 1080p streaming content at this level. My entire setup is automated at this point, I don't lose any time sitting down and scrolling through thousands of my own titles on demand through a 10gb fiber network. If a drive fails, I just pop a new one in and it repopulates automatically because I have a fully automated triple failover scheme. My family and their friends very much enjoy a full theater experience without leaving the house and my extended family enjoys having access to my server in the comforts of their homes as well. Paying for streaming services is death by 1000 cuts.
Quite the humble brag LOL.

As a hardware engineer by trade who maintains mission critical space systems.... Well, triple failover? Not so sure about that. I'd want to take a little better care of my data.

Can you really see the 1080P artifacts on such little screens? my 97" LG (not generally available yet) and 170" projection screen don't really show noticeable artifacts. It might be because we are using quad FPGA accelerated AI image enhancement and upscaling to 4k. It's really amazing what the AI algos can do when trained properly against psychovisual sensitivity.

Gotta agree on the streaming, but more like 12 cuts a year on 6 different services! Am I right? But, who cares I guess when 2 hours of bond interest pays for a years worth!
