You will experiece randon reboots on the new unit. So crawl back there and swap with the new one from the get-go.

If they are different, shouldn't use it.

Currently my Samsung TV convert Youtube videos from 2.0 PCM to simulated 5.1 Sound. My family is well adjusted with the setup. However I am missing Dolby atmos because my TV cannot pass through aduio.
I want to passthrough sound from streaming device to Soundbar if Sound is Atmos, and send simulated 5.1 sound if it is a youtube video.
Can any Steamer do this?
I bought the newer/current triangular controller for $30 when that was released, it made the experience better. It lights up to the slightest movement or when in use. It's less likely to go into the deepest crevices of your couch or bed. The shield tv has a function to ping your remote if it's lost to which it'll ring. And it uses 2 AAA which lasted a good. It was worth the upgrade.
There's also a Shield TV app that can act as a remote, keyboard, or mouse. I only really use it when I can't find either of the remotes. I would install it just to use the find the remote function but turn off all of the phone functions when not in use.
This is my main streaming device. I have Rokus and fire sticks that seldomly get used but keep them for YouTube karoake while a streaming in another room. I did utilize the features like game stream, plex servers, sideloader, iptv etc. when it first came out.
Since then I moved to somewhere that has modest internet speed/service in a rural area, I slowly used those features less and share streaming services with distant siblings. Now everyone and their dog has apple products in my family, and I think I'm making the change to the ATV 4K for the simplicity of apple ecosystem, considering they're less than $100 these days.
For $180, know what you're buying it for. If you're savvy enough to dive into, things others have already stated, what makes this device so great, I definitely recommend it or consider T he next gen to come out.

The important thing is the new Shield remote or "air mouse" ones will work with the old 2017 Shield? ...
Some of the benefits are outlined in this response: https://slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=
old remote: battery cr2032, no lights, sensitive touch volume control, minimal weight
new remote: battery AA, lights, dedicated volume up/down buttons, weight feels heftier
Both can be paired with the Shield at the same time.
