They continued it because it's cheaper to leave out the slot, but more importantly, because people were throwing in cheap SD cards and then complaining about slow performance.
Android still supports external storage via USB-C, network mounted directories, and SD slots where available.
Seems to be a cheap price, especially compared to phones at the same price with 32GB. Tempted to get it as a gift.

This deal is more no-strings-attached unlocked and usable on my preferred service on day 1 for a low price. Bought for my brother who has never had a smartphone and could use it now.

Next gen should have been beefing up the 4G LTE for more consistent service.
