This meter will fit the bill for most people.

The reason you buy a fluke is not because it is better, but because it is easier to justify when going through testing. The name holds a lot of weight.

Only about $8 cheaper than the sale price seen every few months. If you have questions as to why this is better or worse than a $10 multimeter you should not buy it.

This looks the same as 20-30 years ago. Any modern smart meters around?

Probably won't make much difference. Depends on your use case though.

I read once casually that China makes great products for internal sale only and aren't allowed to export them outside the country. Didn't do any other digging to find out more about the statement though.
I think you must have confused Japan with China. Japan makes good products domestically IN JAPAN for domestic sale and contract manufactured in places like China to make the lesser product they sell abroad (like to us). China is the other way round: they have no realistic consumer protection in China yet we have the option to reject the shipment if it's too badly made so they made 'better' stuff for outsiders and save the rejects for domestic sale.

Still rocking my 17b from Alibaba
I have the 18b+ and absolutely love it

For those that dont know what we are talking about: Fluke makes models for the chinese markets. They are lower priced than american market. Got my 18b+ for $120 4 years ago. Dont know what they cost now.

This is good and will be acceptable for most people but if you are really serious about your electronics you'll hold out for one built by Fluke.
I bought Fluke 80s and 90s used and they are very robust and the calibration won't drift. I have DC voltage standards and they are bang on despite being decades old.

Chinese crap can easily be off by a few ten millivolts out of the box. I wouldn't trust the values beyond 1 decimal point (or 2 significant figures) and certainly won't adjust other instruments with it.

This one might be ok, and the board is actually made specifically for fluke so at least we can rule out careless design in Chinese crap brands. Material-wise, it's a $20 meter, but Fluke's backing is worth another $70 if you need it.

How does this compare to the pile of free multimeters I collected over the years from HF? Stick Out Tongue
Guessing this is a joke, but here's a really thorough explanation. https://youtu.be/ay9wFQAW19Y

I've had a few of the HF meters and they're great for low voltage, but I stopped using them as they're not safe... Fluke had a safety video showing those exploding in flames when exposed to the maximum voltage HF rates them for. Plenty of $20+ meters that are safe and have better specs.

Tl;dr... individuals would be better not buying Fluke because they don't offer the best value for money.
