Just a heads up if this is your first time… make sure you set up the aquarium and allow it to run for Atleast two weeks before putting any fish or life inside the tank. It needs to develop bacteria before it can harbor life. Made this mistake one of my first times and had most of the fish die off one by one.

The beneficial bacteria that convert ammonia into nitrite and then to nitrate do not live in the water column. They live on all of the surfaces of the tank, including the filter. It's why you use porous filter media like sponges, lava rock, ceramic rings, or a Bio-Wheel.

The water ain't gonna do nothing except maybe bring over some ick or other diseases. Unless the employee gives you some water and squeezes out the filter into in and then hands it over. That will seed your bacterial colony as they were knocked off from the filter. That most likely will not be enough for a fish-in cycle depending on how many fish you have.

What I do when I set up a new tank is I cut a sponge in half that's inside one of my cycled tanks and toss it into the new one. Or run an additional sponge filter that I can pull out when needed like for quick quarantine tank.

"store pickup only" should be in the title. It may seem obvious, but Amazon did have a 10g tank deal last week that was, of course, shippable.

And it was $10, without lid

One fish will build the nitrogen cycle - just don't load up on week one. Don't run your tank empty.

There are supplements that can speed the cycling process. Ask your local fish store for help with that.

Aaaaand - any local fish store will give you free water. Loading your tank with their water will bring all that good stuff you need to get your tank going in as healthy a way as possible - quickly and safely.

So the water that runs in fish stores is safe to bring home? What's the whole deal about "quarantining" in that case? Quarantining fish is not required? I thought store water should never be used because they get new fish in all the time that could have disease.

They also have a great deal on the bearded dragon tank kits. They're down to $149(plus 10% off) from $279 although it looks like they're selling out quickly.

I have the 29 gallon. I got it maybe 6 months ago during another sale. Good tank. I will pick up a 10 gallon as that's a solid price.

The water isn't what you want. And most aquarist do dump out the water into a net over a bucket, (please don't do this over the sink) and put only the fish into the tank for that very reason. Not only parasites and diseases can be in the water, but hydra as well. And they suck for shrimp keepers.

You should always quarantine your fish if bringing home into an established tank. I quarantine plants as well if they aren't from a pest free type package. I've saved myself from duckweed and snails by placing the plants in a container for a couple weeks. If you are buying all the fish at once and they are coming from the same place, I can understand tossing them all in together. Besides, not many people have multiple quarantine tanks set up for all the fish. That said, it is highly recommended that you quarantine new fish to an established tank. Most of the time you'll be fine, but you can wipe out your entire tank by introducing one fish. Not only expensive, but they're your pets and your responsibility to care for.
