Guys I post this on every thread for the AX86U . If you are buying this for 160mhz speeds then don't. This router will drop back to 80mhz speeds. If you want true gigabit in network transfers over wifi then you need 160mhz or your speed will be capped.

Does Merlin fix the issues? Any particular wifi cards work with its 160?

This has never been on the coupon list previously, but this is a fantastic wifi6 router, probably the best single-unit solution out there at its price point. Mine will run for months with no issues, plus Merlin firmware if you need it.

merlin did not fix it for me . I have been using this with the AX201 card. I have four laptops connecting with AX201 all have the same issue. I think this is firmware problem. I remember when I got this router the connection remained stable at 160 mhz for three weeks utnil it went through a fw update,

Ok so to let everyone know I have a 2600 Sq FT two storied house. The router is placed centrally in one of my closets and some of my external ring cameras (front of the house)would always drop out. I had to add an older AC68U in mesh and all is good now. I hoped this would be a single unit solution for me as well but turned out to be otherwise.

Just FYI if you are not sure whether ax86u or ax86s, then get ax86s. As mentioned the that deal thread, the RAM and CPU is not going to be a huge difference. Anyway, the $60 price difference for me is worth the upgrade and you can never have too much memory.

Not to imply you haven't tried a lot of fixes, but did you try some of the recommendations from an snb thread? Like below.

I know my old, old Asus router had trouble on 5GHz with certain channels and DFS. 80MHz, granted. But this recommendation is the same fix I've been using for years: channel 36 and manual wide bandwidth setting.

Wondering if I should get this as I have an old but reliable workhorse AC68U, though there are deadspots in some locations (2,500sqft/2 story).

Costco has this on sale for $269 and it's 6E:

If I can (just did that change and tracking it on 86S). Hope this helps.
Use a SSID with alpha numeric only. No spaces.
Use Dual Band SmartConnect
5 GHz at 160 MHz on channel 36
WPA2/WPA3 Personal

I used a AC68U for years without issues. About a year ago I 'upgraded' to an Asus AX89U. When 6e is working it's insanely fast - hard to believe it's wireless. The issue is I have several older wifi products that just wouldn't play nice with this router until I disabled a lot of the 6e features. I finally was able to figure out the settings enough to have everything running again
but at the cost of no 6e. That said, I'm in a 3 level 2000sq/ft home with the router on the lowest level and the range/signal strength is noticeably better. If I were to do it again, I'd probably keep chugging along on the AC68U and save myself a few hundred bucks.

I don't think you can get 1 gbit over Wi-Fi unless you are using Wi-Fi 6e and are very close to the access point

Thank you for sharing the link yes I have been to this thread. I set it to 36 and always manually select my channel . I think I saw in one of the post that the ssid should not have spaces . For me the 5g does have a space. I want to try that next during the holidays as that is a big change and cumbersome ... did this setting work for you? Are you able to connect at 160 to your router ?
