I bought this during CM and here are some general and performance tips:

If paying via Affirm, the pay-off option will appear after a couple of days in the Affirm app. Initially it says "processing".

RAM is upgradable to 40GB. Adding 32GB of SO-DIMM (DDR4-3200, CL22) and changing the following settings bumped my Geekbench scores to 1701 / 9275 (single-core/multi-core):

Settings>System>Power & battery>Best performance
In MyASUS app: Fan Profile > Performance mode

HDD is also removable (upgradable). For example, upgrading to SAMSUNG 980 Pro PCle 4.0 NVMe M.2 provided another performance boost on HDD benchmarks. HDD heatsink is built-in on the mainboard.

OLED display is bright and sharp. Native resolution is almost unreadable (texts too small), so change fonts to 150% (recommended default option, I believe).

Battery life depends on usage and performance modes (see above). I changed them back to battery-optimized modes after running the benchmark tests. I'll probably get 6 hours when browsing the web under battery-optimized settings. Setting to performance modes will severely drain battery that's for sure. If battery life is a major concern, please skip this and look for an M1 Macbook (Air or Pro) for around $799 or $899; these have 16 - 20 hrs of battery life.

Fan noise is noticeable under Performance mode and very quiet in Whisper mode.

This Asus has a backlit keyboard. And don't forget to update the firmware using the included MyAsus app.

Wear an anti-static strap (cheap on Amazon) when working on upgrading the laptop; components are even more cramped than my 7-year-old laptop this is replacing. Otherwise, sparks will fly if you drop a screw (with battery still attached EEK! ).

I updated the wiki with the following info, not sure if it belongs there or here:

I bought this from the ebay seller a month ago. I love this laptop - build quality is amazing (two caveats), no flex, beautiful screen.
I got the 16GB Ram 1 TB ram SSD version
1. Trackpad is slightly too big / far to the right for me and can click when you pick up the laptop while open from the left side. Wish the track pad was more to the left slightly.
2. Reverb on left speaker can be created from some sound combinations. A piece of electrical tape inside the MB on the speaker fixes this.

Pros: Whisper mode is SILENT - love it, performance is great, though haven't super stressed it yet. Smart charge to 60% while plugged in is a plus, quality feel, OLED screen is vibrant, and it feels SOLID but is still light.

Plus it has a fullsize hdmi port, 2x usbc, and usb a and headphone mic jack.
The 8GB stick is soldered but you can swap the 4GB for a 32GB to get to 40GB. There is another deal thread for Costco where this is discussed in more detail.

The description on Newegg's website also confirms this. "8GB DDR4 on board + 4GB DDR4 SO-DIMM RAM"

So tempted; but baffled why this deal @ $599 is not getting (much) more love, even with no touch (2-in-1's were a past "must have", but I've realized that I almost NEVER end up using cuz I can't stand smudgy display).

With yowza overall specs for the $, plus upgradable RAM, (and despite heavy weight) ...what am I missing?

Having 8GB soldered limits you to a 16GB dual channel config. Even with flex you'd have most of your memory running single channel.

Same deal was available a few weeks ago and a similar deal at Costco for $699 but without the Affirm plan. There are deal threads for those with lots of activity. I'm guessing the people who wanted it already got it and that's why this isn't getting much attention.

I ended up buying it from Costo for the extra warranty and easy ability to return if I end up not liking it. Also, no love lost for Newegg for past shenanigans.

The main reason I bought this was price, positive reviews for the screen, powerful CPU, ability to upgrade RAM and HD. Negatives are generally heat and fan noise but that those issues can be mitigated with configuration. I don't need or want a touchscreen so that wasn't a factor for me.

That's valid but for my use cases for this machine, running single channel will not make much of a difference. Most of the laptops I've evaluated at this price point have 16GB soldered at most, with no possibility to upgrade. I'm just going to be doing basic stuff like running Quicken, Excel, Chrome and Spotify. This machine is probably overkill for what I'm doing but I'm upgrading from an old NUC that can barely do those tasks now so I'm looking forward to it.

I think this could be a great gaming computer with my rtx 3070 external gpu. Will the 12700h have heating issues in a laptop of this size?
