Semi pro tip... a crescent wrench adjusted to just barely over the outside diameter of the pipe will disengage the sharkbite lock without needing to buy a special tool.

If you're removing a bunch, spend the few bucks too make it easier but if it's just one or two.... Grab a crescent wrench instead.

Or just properly install your sharkbite fittings and you wont have any issues.

Doesn't mean he did it right, and I wouldn't ever pay a plumber for a sharkbite. That's. Just. Wow

I'm a dummy and forgot to detach my hose and a freeze came and my frost-proof anti-siphon sill cock burst and leaks only when my faucet is turned on. Comes out of brick/mortar.

It's not leaking/gushing on inside I think because of the stem bottom assembly. There's no shutoff valve to the outside faucet so would need to turn off water to whole house.

How would I use this exactly or would it be useful for my situation? I'd like to install an actual shutoff valve though at same time I replace the anti siphon sill cock. I also have zero plumbing experience so any tips recommended.

This is a shut-off valve like those found under the sink. The output is too small to be useful for a hose faucet. It could be used to cut and cap off the pipe inside the house (if the pipe is accessible and the right type and size) while you investigate replacing or repairing the faucet. It sounds like not too bad a problem at present, so you have time to figure out an approach.

What I'm suggesting these valves for is situations like Texas had two years ago: lots of people without power, pipes freeze, the stores are empty of these quick fittings. At this price, having a few on hand lets you cut and cap off burst pipes to get other parts of the house working. Then they can be easily removed afterwards to do complete repairs.

I'm not a plumber but have experience on my own home. I'm guessing you might have to replace the whole thing to the pipe. Best to figure out how it connects first (threaded, sweat, compression, etc). Could just be a part at big box hardware and some strength.

As for the shutoff, if you want a whole home shutoff, I'm betting you need a plumber. On a fixture, they're pretty easy if you have access.

Knowing nothing about these before this thread my takeaway is...these seem like a great idea, just make sure you know that you or your plumber is very good.

Sounds like he did not properly prep the pipe and damaged the O-ring. I use sharkbite all the time and I've never had a failure. They are rated for 25 years as is Pex pipe, etc. Peace
Sorry you had a bad experience.

I use shark bite all the time too. They are perfectly fine if you a) install them properly and b) install them once (or twice). Where you get trouble (and this has happened to me) is reusing them, you can damage the ring. But slip it in firmly once and they are just fine.

This must be an old one, the ones I've seen have just a quarter turn shut off valve on them

Pic is from a commercial one that requires a key - so the rabble don't play with it...
