The 480 chipset isn't slow at all - don't judge by its name. The 480 5G is Qualcomm's most ambitious response to MTK's dominance of the midrange smartphone chipsets. It's Qualcomm's second chipset with a 3-core ISP (the first is 888). Its overall performance is on par with or slightly better than 835, game performance with 845, and 40% faster than 675, which is used on 2021 G Stylus 4G.

Yes it's the 2021 model, with the snapdragon 480 (slow). But if you don't care about gaming, this is a pretty sweet deal. It's got 5G, free year of service, big screen... Couple use cases: 1) throw it in your glovebox as an emergency phone, 2) hand it to a kid as an emergency phone in their backpack, you can lock it down so they can only talk/text. This deal comes around once a year and it's crazy how slick this is.... other outlets selling the phone at 200 bucks.... with NO SERVICE. Jump on this.

That is not (calling a dedicated number) extremely easy. They send you a text after 60 days reminding you that your phone is eligible for unlock. You click on the text message and follow the instructions. That way you do not have to talk with anybody.

Is it Hotspot capable? I have the Boost Mobile locked version of this phone and the hotspot works well when my normal home internet goes out.

If it's like every other Motorola TracFone ive had hot spot is present in the settings but disabled by the carrier. Hotspot may or may not work later if you bring the phone to another carrier.

One thing to be aware of is the camera only does video recording at 1080p. It cannot record 4K. Other specs like processor speed are slight improvements in the 2021 G model vs the 2021 non g model.

so how long before this has to be activated. My current plan ends in March. Can I just keep this in a drawer till then?

"Customer must activate the phone within one year of purchase." is the official response. However, I've heard of people activating way later without any issue. YMMV on that.

I have left mine fallow for a year. If you add the new phone it will start its added year in March. So if you added it tomorrow the ending subscription would show March 2024.

It's a good deal but I'm in the same boat as you (April '23 exp). I'm going to hold off until I actually need a refresh of minutes They'll probably be more deals coming this winter. Why do I say that? Because the economy probably rolled over into recession just a few weeks ago. Retail sales figures just turned negative as of this week's report. The PMI flash that came out on Friday shows that the economy moved deeper into contraction this past month. 2023 will be another 2008. Buckle up.
