As a parent I have stock in a lot of batteries including a pack of LR44's because a couple other toys use them. You can get them for less then 25 cents each on Amazon.

Look up "LCD Writing Tablet" on Amazon. They go for less than $10, it's the same tech and the designs on Amazon are much sleeker with a bigger screen and a thin, flat design.,
