Ladies and gents, this thread is about 16gb ram M1 mba. If 8gb M macbook satisfies your needs, good for you. You are more than welcome to feel strong about your opinion but that doesn't always mean it's true. I honestly don't even understand why ppl would come here and explain others how sufficient 8gb m1 macbook is. Ppl are here because this is a good deal. I don't think anyone would disagree that a 16gb ram macbook would go further than a 8gb macbook. This is not a cheap product and that's why we are all here. To buy good products at a good price that would hopefully last for a long time.

It does not matter, as efficient as the M chips are, that doesn't mean the apps you use are all optimized. If one app uses 4gb of ram then it uses 4gb of ram. And that's one app. Even if the apps uses only a few hundred, end of the day, 16gb allows more apps open and running simultaneously (especially background apps). I also speak from actual experience of owning a M1 Air 8GB. I figured 8gb should be fine on a Mac especially an M1 chip but nope. That thing got slow a lot and I'm not even a power user. Traded that in for the base model 14" pro with 16GB ram. Works so much better.

Some knowledgeable input would be appreciated — This or keep the $800 Apple 2020 MacBook Air Laptop M1 Chip, 13" Display, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD?

this would last you longer cuz of the RAM, maybe 10 months or so

Had M1 for about a year and got the same spec of M2 around $1800, but didn't feel any difference performance wise other than the outlook.
This is a great deal for an amazing laptop.

Got it for this price around Black Friday and ain't sorry. Scored a Wacom Cintiq One and i now have a mini version of my work MBP at home for less than 1/3 the price.

QUIET AS A MOUSE.
What does having Wacom Cintiq One do/add to this macbook air? I'm having wife take interior design courses and am debating between this air or MBP 14"... but difference is nearly $500 and mbp is 512gb. So if going with air was also looking into drawing tablet

Even performance wise they are similar, M1 model is 2 year older than M2 and Apple will make M1 obsolete two year earlier than M2.

Well I still think the money saved to have M1 worth it though.

One thing worthy to mention is that normally the larger SSD gets bigger TBW, meaning longer lifespans in general. Also the 16GB RAM helps reduce the swapping between memory and disk. It's a clear winner over the same price M2 of 8GB/256GB model at this price point.

I want to get my first MacBook, specifically the base M2 Air. Like you said in previous post, I like the better screen. It's also the refresh this year makes it look esthetically more appealing to me.

You mention getting by with 8 GB for normal workloads. I would primarily use the MacBook for: Zoom calls; Microsoft Word; web-browsing; Maybe Netflix. Would these things be considered "normal workload"?
I think 8gb should be fine.
If you regularly open lots of browser tabs (10-20 or more), do image editing with large images (or raw photo processing) or videos editing etc. or have other demanding apps then 16 will be better.
Also if you do these activities occasionally, you'll be fine.

This is a great deal on a great loaded computer. I would snatch it if I didn't have one. Don't bother with the M2.

I went with this deal, my reason was the space and ram, over the performance if any....

Honestly, this deal is for software developers or people do heavy video editing, or just rich folks don't mind the cost. Otherwise 8gb 256g ssd should suffice for most daily tasks(web browsing, emails, edit Office document and even some coding task and light weight video editing)

Think of the base model of air is a nice plus of iPad, to do stuff that an iPad can't perform efficiently but have to run on a laptop, then the price and config does make much more sense(current discount to $800). And same as iPad, there are options to upgrade to better ram and storage but most people can work with base model of iPad just fine for common usage
