TIL there are rechargeable D batteries. What I use AA's in the D battery adapters I got from the energizer combo specials from Costco back when they were on clearance

Heads up that these are 2500 mAh. They're a decent deal, but when compared to the larger capacity, rechargeable D cell batteries, they're not an amazing deal. That said, I still bought some because I figure if they fail at least it's a smaller capacity battery failing instead of a larger capacity battery failing.

Based on the 2500mAh rating these aren't much better. I own the energizer AAs in the same line and they have a 2300mAh rating.

The good news is that these energizer are usually made in Japan so performance similar to eneloop.

One other technical note is the voltage. These (like most all) NiMh batteries are only 1.2V to start vs 1.5V for alkaline. They can definitely work in many applications but are not ideal for all applications. For comparison, alkaline "D" cells start with (at least) [email protected] while NiMh start at 1.2v@ 3000MaH.

Last point, NimH hold their voltage better than alkaline which is particularly better in high drain/load situations.

Correct. The charge curves of alkaline vs. NiMh actually show that you get a well more sustained 1.2 V for much longer with rechargeable. Alkaline quickly fall to 1.2V even though they start above 1.5V. And their drop off is much more steep; especially at higher amp draws.

Yes, some equipment simply won't work with a starting voltage of 1.2, but that same equipment is robbing you of a good portion of your alkaline power if they stop working at around 1.3V causing you to throw away nearly half the charge left in a disposable battery = bad design.

This site has mega amounts of info related to good chargers, comparisons between battery chemistry types, etc. Pic below is an example of a decent Alkaline vs. NiMH battery, showing how much more long term power a NiMH has provided your device isn't badly designed to not work with it.

These seem to be functionally the same thing, given the low capacity. Tenergy has 8000mah rechargeable LSDs that I use primarily for paper towel dispensers and they work great.

Omg Tenergy. I avoid that brand like the plague. Their old batteries died quickly and one of them even EXPLODED in one of my battery chargers. I would not trust that cheap junk.

I only use their C and D cells, given lack of other options on the market. Mine have been fine, and I trust any rechargeable batteries while charging as far as I can flick them. But I appreciate the heads-up-- I'll make sure to not get lazy/sloppy about it (not that you were; didn't mean it like that.)
