I got two of these, and they are pretty good. It's alarming to see how low the humidity is in sub 20* outdoor temps.

Costco had the Homedics 2-Gallon humidifier with UV on sale for the same price in store for a while (I bought one two weeks ago and believe it's still on sale as of yesterday). It's still on sale on their website but at a higher price ($74.99). Maybe worth checking the warehouse when it opens tomorrow.

I tried the homedics... Imo, it's not designed that well. If I use a bucket to fill, it ends up missing the hole half the time because of how they designed the fill hole and slope of it. I fill these levoit with no issue with the same bucket.

The app is also nice to easily adjust schedule and set a smart scene. The water reservoir is just a tad small but at least it notifies you on low water.

The one pretty big difference is the power draw (didn't measure the homedic) but these misting ones seem to draw 20w on cool mist. The Vornado one with dual reservoir takes 3w.

Anyone has any tips for maintaining humidifiers? They tend to eventually develop mold or whatever that slippery substance is. And it's a huge huge PITA to clean due to all of the crevices. I wish there was a way to not have to worry about the water developing that slime.

The only solution is use purified water or distilled and clean if more often.

The latest reviews on these seem to indicate a lot of issues.

That's unfortunate. Some days I forget to clean it and even after 1 day, it can develop that slippery substance. I was hoping there was some kind of drop you can put in to prevent it completely.

I've only used distilled water on my humidifiers and have not had any mold or slime that you mentioned. Using tap water or filtered tap water will usually cause issues.

i had the $25 sunbeam warrm mist humidifier from Walmart.
never cleaned it.
didnt know i was supposed to clean it. EEK!

3yrs later, it stopped working.
took it apart and saw all this hard crud on the ultrasonic ball thing.

bought another humidifier from walmart. (they no longer sold my sunbeam model)
cleaned it weekly.
it was a pain.
returned it a month later.

from what i read, for maintenance free, you have to use distilled water which adds to the costs. (.80/gal @ walmart)

waiting for a maintenance free version that uses tap water. LMAO

This is why I mention diffusers. They never get moldy, but don't put out enough humidity.

The hard crud is just mineral buildup from the water you used. It probably stopped working because of the buildup. That I can live with because you can usually just soak the tank in vinegar solution. The slimy substance is what seems to be really gross.

I have Vornado humidifiers and every morning I dump the water out from the main unit and let it air dry. It only takes a minute and I don't have to clean for the season since it doesn't get the chance to glunk up. At night I just reattach the water bin and run it.

That has really bad reviews on Amazon so I'm planning on returning mine. I haven't opened it yet. Maybe this one is better
