Same price at Amazon if you don't have a Costco membership.

You need to buy the one you can fully disassemble and clean every parts. Distilled water will buy you some time but will eventually build mold inside. It's in the air not just the water source.

You simply must learn to become one with the mold.

Anyone has any tips for maintaining humidifiers? They tend to eventually develop mold or whatever that slippery substance is. And it's a huge huge PITA to clean due to all of the crevices. I wish there was a way to not have to worry about the water developing that slime.
Bro.. yes this is a huge headache. I've tried bleach, vinegar, and soap without much success. The UV does nothing to my knowledge on the homedics that I have.

Any recommendations on ones that you can disassemble?

I've used Aircare 5 Gallon evaporative humidifiers for the last 3 years. Need to replace the wick about 2-3 times a year but never had an issue with mold or mildew with tap water. It puts about 5 gallons of water in the air in 24 hours at a medium speed setting. Makes a huge difference in a large house.

I think this is a common problem! I found a couple of things on Amazon which I don't know how many of them will work …

There is this one I ended up getting due to cost: TREATMENT WATER/BAC 32OZ https://a.co/d/2GPkpQp

There is also one by Purefy but more expensive for me to take the gamble.

There also appears to be two types of "drop ins" though some are just activated carbon and another that looks like it was for fish tanks. Neither seem convincing.

I think the water chemical one most likely is diluted chlorine for the slime. Idk about de-mineralization or de-calcification.

Maybe a dumb question but what are some common need cases for dehumidifiers? I often feel like I would benefit from one but I'm not totally sure what they are supposed to help with (aside from the obvious making more moisture in the air).

I've been using this now for a week straight so far and no buildup or slick surface... Yet. I'm still skeptical of them since I only just started using these but reviewers seemed very positive on it. Problem is it's pricey:

Does this thing have bright blue lights you can't shut off?

Every one of these things light up my bedroom and I am way too old for a night light

Are cool mist humidifiers better or the ones that actually heat the water up?

Add a whole house humidifier to your furnace, and just change the filter once a year. Our house humidity maintains at least 43% in the winter which isn't horrible.

Bought two recently. Seems to be far easier to clean than the homemedic ones. The tubes inside can be taken apart and washed

Costco had the Homedics 2-Gallon humidifier with UV on sale for the same price in store for a while (I bought one two weeks ago and believe it's still on sale as of yesterday). It's still on sale on their website but at a higher price ($74.99). Maybe worth checking the warehouse when it opens tomorrow.
