How? How does a well made knife (whether for EDC or not) become "old tech"?

A lot of makers are heading towards more stainless steel options like S35VN.
I personally think 1095 is an amazing steel if you actually use your knives and need to touch up in the field.
S35VN will hold an edge longer but 1095 will sharpen easier and is more forgiving to hand sharpening.

I have Esee 5 and Esee Laser Strike.
On my 5, I stripped the coating and then used mustard to etch some tiger stripes into it. It actually looks really good.

I won't be able to do arts and crafts. I'm not very good at it.

A little bit deceptive by Ontario on the Amazon listing, the RAT line was switched over to 1075. I'm not sure the average person would notice the difference, but something to consider.

Are these basically the same as Esee? They look the same. Is one better quality than the other?
As far as people using them, I've heard over and over that ESEE seems to be a little better finish and the handle feels better. I've heard ESEE may have better heat treating, giving the 1095 a little better edge-holding over a long period of time.

Also, I've heard from people that ESEE is VERY adamant about their warranty and they definitely back it up. You break it, we'll replace it. Ontario has a standard "Limited Lifetime" warranty, which may be good, just not as generous and proactive if it looks like you abused it.

Maybe someone on SD with direct use of both can expound or speak from personal experience.

Once the standard in EDC, now kinda old tech. Still worth supporting a US based company, but lots of other knives in this price range, some Spydercos even…
You and I have very different definitions of "tech" LOL!

Got an ESEE sitting on my desk. It's the best knife I've ever owned. Just on a different level.

Yeah I agree, this won't cut anything because materials have grown cut-resistance to 1095 steel.

1095 can also take a beating. I have an ESEE that I don't think I could break if I tried.
Not with that attitude.

I own a few of each and you can feel the quality difference between them.
That being said the Ontario is still a great knife and better quality than most other knives you will see at walmart or Academy.

At the risk of going off topic, what do you all do where a fixed blade knife is the right tradeoff between useful and convenient vs a folder?

I dint often carry a fixed blade on my body. Usually just when I am hunting or camping. But I have multiple fixed blades. and keep them around where they are convenient to have. Like one in each car, one in each bugout bag etc.
For EDC I just carry a small folder, usually an Ontario Rat 1.

ESEE originally designed the RAT for Ontario. ESEE in my opinion has significantly better quality and lifetime warranty.

Nice. I guess I just need to try harder Smilie. Maybe a sledgehammer?

I have the ESEE 6, and it has held up very well. I have used it to baton wood on multiple camping trips and it is still sharp and barely scratched. Definitely my go to knife I trust. Also, can't beat the warranty. I am more and more going the route of buy once, cry once.

Nice. 1095 steel just like the Idaho guy's EDC.
