If you already copied the entire C drive to your external, just let sleeping dogs lie. We can deal with that issue later.
Reboot the laptop as I said above and hit Ctrl + F11 when it is restarting. See if this brings up the System Recovery.
If so, go ahead and follow the directions onscreen and reinstall Windows.
Once Windows is reinstalled, go to Windows Update and get all of the updates available. This will take some time and you will have to do it repeatedly. Continue going back to Windows Update until it tells you that there are no more updates available.
Once that's done, it's time for Anti Virus software. You can go to http://www.free-av.com and download the free version of Avira. It's pretty good. Others might recommend a different Anti Virus, and that's fine.
Once you have Anti Virus software installed, plug in the external drive and scan all the files/folders that you copied to it (your C drive).
Once the scan is complete, ONLY MOVE the Documents, photos, videos, etc that you want to keep back to your laptop.
The thing you REALLY DON'T WANT to do is to just copy everything back over. There are files that you don't need even if they aren't infected. Moving them back will just cause issues.
(BTW, I have found that it works better to CUT and PASTE instead of Copy and Paste. I'l explain the logic of it later if you want, but go with me on this one
