Yes, it is necessary to freeze them, if you won't use before the expiration date. I don't know how well butter freezes. But, unused butter will start to oxidize from the outside in. If the butter has begun to oxidize, you can see it when you cut off the end of the stick of butter. The outer edges of the butter will have a different color... a darker, almost translucent color, showing that the butter has oxidized. You can cut away the oxidized sides and still use what's left. But, you don't want to consume the oxidized parts of the butter. It's as bad as eating partially hydrogenated oil (margarine).

Oxidized fat has nothing to do with partially hydrogenated (Trans fat) oil. LMAO

I'm baffled why no one can seem to make decent butter in the States. Irish butter like the Kerrygold and French butter is better than anything I've found, including expensive stuff like Tillamook (which is decent though) and locally-made butter around here, Amish-country, and in several other places.

Lidl has Irish butter that is nearly as good as Kerrygold, not quite though.

'Better' here is relative to higher fat content (read the label) esp when it's used for baking.

(Also explains what others have said too like easier to cut...)
