Is there a good, inexpensive one, for the boot drive and 1tb? It is either that or get a new computer instead of keeping something old alive. Is there a good PC or laptop on sale in the $500 or so range, but less then $900?

Not a good brand. Although the price looks enticing, the product is of poor quality and fails unexpectedly. Warranty claims are complicated and take a long time, there's no online warranty claim form. Would not recommend

From professional experience, PNY isn't a brand you would associate with reliability. But they are cheap, so you could probably run 2+ in a RAID array for the cost of an equivalent Samsung or Intel drive.

Solid option for casual PC users/gamers, though. Cheap way to not have to uninstall and reinstall/re-download several gigabyte games every time you get the desire to play something different.

Pro tip - don't let Windows use these as a swap file/page file drive. That cuts the life down on any drive. But if you're starting from a budget tier SSD, is it worth it? Intel pretty much gave up on Optane drives, making them like $8 used on eBay. So I typically run one of those for dedicated swap file/page file use. They are great at random read/writes. Of course, if you pay for enough RAM in the first place, swap file/page files aren't really an issue.

After the junk USB drives that can barely transfer anything even waiting on it I would NEVER buy anything PNY again, not even these garbage USB drives. Not sure if anyone remembers they went to plastic on the USB connector....yeah I knew that would not last and sure enough they didn't. I would chance a product with TeamGroup over anything PNY anyday.

Plus concerns about data safety when you send a drive in for a warranty repair. Work data is confidential. And I sure as hell don't want anyone viewing my PornHub history - I mean, credit card info.

The failure rate was high enough at the company I work for that we had to implement a plan that the read/writes manufacturers claim could be independently verified. But the drives are cheap, which is why we tried switching to PNY in the first place. If you are not constantly reading and writing to the drive, I am sure that this a solid option for many people.

Use case issue. A car driven for 100k miles a year is likely going to have more problems than a car driven for 10k a year. And if both cars are driven 100k, a Lexus is going to be more reliable than a Kia - but you're paying Lexus prices and not Kia prices. Is the Kia better? No. But can you buy 3 Kias for the price of a Lexus? Yes, so what is more important?

This is an absolutely insane price for SSDs of that size. I remember being lucky to get a 120GB drive for $25 not that long ago, now you can get over 4 times that for the same price. Perfect to use as a game drive.

Also, in addition to the 1TB model linked earlier, the 2TB model is supposed to be around $95, but it seems to be out of stock at each site (maybe a placeholder for incoming stock?)

It -maybe- will work on a USB 2.0 port (there are USB 2.0 harddrives after all and those would take a lot more power than this does). Anything USB 3.0 or higher should definitely work, the only externals that need external power are ones with 3.5" harddrives. Everything else (2.5" HHDs and SSDs) can be fully USB powered.

SSDs require very little power, so you're fine with just a regular USB to SATA adapter. Only need external power with the old school power-hungry mechanical drives.

I do recommend at least a USB 3 adapter though, cause what is the point to get a fast SSD if you're going to bottleneck it to a crawl at USB2 speed.

Don't get a hotbox that goes on sale from time to time. I had to buy a new PSU, case, MOBO, fans etc to fix it. Build you own.

Might price out a new build with as many old parts as you can scavenge.

Cases were $69 at BB at one time this week. If you can reuse the PSU, case, DDR4, and GPU that is huge savings.

Also, if you shop the 1100 intel CPUs sometimes you will luck out on a clearance special. Same for MOBOs.

Just start collecting parts!

Boot drive can be a quality 500GB and maybe even a 250GB. Check the WD.com, BB, Newegg, Amazon etc.

Just gave my neighbor's son a case built with left over parts that was perfect.

I wouldn't use it for sensitive data. But it will breath some new life into an old computer that's used mainly for checking email and Craigslist etc
