  • About Duolingo:
    • Lessons focus on a real-life goal — for instance, ordering at a restaurant. Learners develop the vocabulary and grammar needed to achieve that goal through lots of varied practice in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
    • Duolingo allows learners to discover patterns on their own without needing to focus on language rules — the same way you learned your first language as a child. This approach, called "implicit learning," is ideal for developing a strong foundational knowledge of a language and its rules.
    • At Duolingo, we're committed to improvement. Test questions are embedded throughout our courses to measure how learners are progressing — and to show where Duolingo can improve.

The biggest problems with these language learning apps is the people that skulk around and shame you from using them because it's not going to make you fluent in a language. Yes, you're not going to learn Spanish perfectly without resources outside an app, but it really helps getting started and remaining on the course to learning an additional language.

I have a 5+ year streak going and can tell you without a doubt I know multitudes more Spanish now than I did when I started. Would I have learned more Spanish in those 5+ years if I took classes? Absolutely, but I took Spanish in school for 13 years and barely learned anything. It's all what you make of it

Incidentally, I renewed mine today for $59. Also, I completed 1,000 day streak today!. I started with the free version. It limited how much I can learn. I then switched over to the paid version and it has been worth it. I speak a good Spanish now (I am 65y old) and understand 90+%. I am going to Mexico City in 2 weeks so that I can use my skills and learn more Spanish too. Please remember that paying $59 doesn't make you fluent in Spanish. It is the time you spend learning and this app makes that possible. $5 a month is worth it. There are also free podcasts to learn conversational Spanish, but very limited.

Any idea how to get this promotion as a current subscriber? My sub ends Jan 10, feels bad to be penalized for not having my subscription expire at the 'right time'.

Would you be able to elaborate please Smilie
Others have covered this too, but to summarize: Super (paid) removes most of the "friction" points and restrictions on how much Duo you can reasonably do in a day.

Unlimited mistakes, personalized practice sessions that focus on improving where you need it most, more "streak freezes" in case you miss a day, all add up to making it easier to spend more time learning.

Edit: I will say that even at full price, $120 for a whole family to be able to learn as many languages as they want for a year is a pretty good deal (and you *don't* have to stick with a single language, you can each do as many as you want concurrently). For effectively half price it's a slick deal.

Have a great trip! Duolingo has its own podcast and it's pretty decent. You can even go back and start from the beginning. I have another that may be nice too! Buenas noches!

I've been using it to learn Portuguese and it's been helping a lot. I paid the $89 or whatever it was a few months ago already. Frown
