A hack of a hack is another way of saying fraud. It is fraudulent to return something for more than you paid.

The actual hack prorates the values of the items on the receipt, so that if you choose to return/cancel a part of the order you get the legitimately prorated amount back, not the full retail value.

Is this true that hacks no longer work? Like if you want to return this to keep the prorated gift you can't really do that anymore as HD asks to return both items?

If anything it will declare the items at a certain value, so if you return one you're only getting a percentage of that exact item returned back in cash.

Now you could take the free gift and return it without receipt for store credit though

You need to provide ID for this. I was flagged for making moderately normal returns without receipts and couldn't return for over a year. I did this at HD a lot since I was always there I didn't mind store credit at all and had no idea they could do that. I think it's called the retail equation or something like that

$72.65 for the 4-tool kit after hack. (e.g. returning the 1/2" Brushless Impact, which rings up as $86.35 — itself a deal after hack as well.).

Or heck - keep both, and sleep well knowing each was a solid deal.

In my home depot cart is says that the 4 tool combo kit is priced at $84.84 and the free tool (circular saw) is priced at $74.16 so is that not accurate?

$72.65 for the kit after hack (using impact wrench) seems like a definite Slickdeal. Not sure why this doesn't have more traction.
