My cats keep chewing on my ethernet cables, lol. Good replacement for $1.25. Keep in mind this is only 5' feet long. There are longer options available, but none of them are priced as low as this one by length: $0.25/ft

Also. Cat6 cable supports up to 1Gbps in speed. If your speeds are 1Mbps - 1Gbps, Cat6 is appropriate. Cat 5 is good for speeds of 1Mbps - 100Mbps, if you can find a cable cheaper than this one that is Cat5, Great! If not, Cat6 is fine for lower speeds. Smilie

I needed a short cable and bought a 1-footer CAT7 for $5 a few months ago. This would have done the deed if I had it in stock... sigh.

Just keep in mind those distances assume solid core cables (ie in-wall riser), not stranded cables (ie patch cables like this deal).

Considering the relatively trivial price difference between 6a and 5e/6 now, I wouldn't go out and buy CAT5e or CAT6 for a 10GbE deployment, but I also wouldn't have concerns running 10GbE over a 5' length of CAT6 in an home environment, even with stranded conductors.

Noted, more good info.

I am only running Cat6 10GbE in my house because I had a ton of leftover cable from data center consolidations. I also run Twinax DAC for runs closest to my network gear, as I don't prefer 10GBase-T SFP+ transceivers due to excess heat.

fun note on that, cat 5/e/6 are exactly the same electrically, the only difference is 6 has more insulation between the strands. and it is a tiny amount trust me.

i need a white patch cable though, to better blend in with my walls Frown i dont even see a white amazon basics wth...

edit found 10 ft "light gray" amazon basics cat 7 patch cable 10ft is 3.20. interestingly the 7 ft length i'd rather have was $11, so i went with the 10ft anyway.

What length? Monoprice has a 14' white 5e for $1.99 [monoprice.com]

If you need something shorter for a patch panel, check out their SlimRun 6a stuff.

Having 1 Gig internet installed at home next month and may even upgrade to their 10 Gig. Recommendations on cables to get? Still figuring out what route to go for a router. Thinking WiFi 6E, as there are some WiFi 7 coming but devices supporting it are quite a ways off (most of the routers aren't even out yet). With the latest iPad Pro having WiFi 6E, it'll be added to other devices as they too see a refresh.

Until you have a school/stadium level of Wifi congestion, 6/6e is probably overkill for most home applications. Unless your individual devices are fully Wifi 6 capable, and have a decent antenna, you probably won't see meaningful speed improvements to individual devices. Overall throughput in a congested network will definitely improve with Wifi 6 vs 5, but individual devices won't see significant speed improvements in many scenarios. Obviously, if the price is right, there's no reason not to go with a more "future-proof" 6e Wifi setup.

For in-wall, 6a should be fine, but is more difficult to terminate if you're re-wiring your entire house on your own. Unless you have a lot of long runs (>50m/150'), even 5e should be fine for up to at least 45m (and that limitation only applies to 10GbE; for standard 1GbE, it's just the usual 100m restriction). For network closet/patch panel connectivity, I'd go with the Monoprice 6a SlimRun cables.
