Does this pass current into your laptop/pc like many of the cheap USB/power hubs do?

EDIT: After searching for "fry" and "fried" in questions and reviews, I see that they do. Negative reviews mention their connected electronics and computer being fried. These are dangerous.
Bought the 4 port 3.0 USB hub for $8 in 2018 from Amazon. 50% price hike in 5 years doesn't seem like much of a deal.

Good for the "old" MacBook Pro. The Pro and Max chips are too powerful and expensive for most, so this makes the 13in MBP much easier to live with

In for 6 hubs for $13.60, or $2.26 each. According to the Camel, that's the cheapest a hub has ever been.

Have this 5-port usb-c hub. Whenever I plug it in with a microsd card inside, it will be recognized, auto-ejected, and possibly recognized again. I said possibly cuz it sometimes won't, and I have to unplug and plug it in again.

Not the greatest product I purchased, will probably avoid in the future.

Would the 5 hub be a good "charging station" for tablets and game controllers etc in my media room?

No. Those USB 3 and USB 2 ports are data ports only. The power delivery comes out of the USB-C port only AFAIK. So you could only charge something that uses a USB-C charging cord.
You would need one with charging ports, like the 10 ports model with 3 charging ports listed here.
