If you're serious about wanting to get into rowing go with a concept 2 (currently $990). They're basically the gold standard of rowers (unless you are looking at rowers way more expensive). It will last forever, has the largest selection of third party apps that can sync with it (I'm a fan of Asensei), and will hold its resale value if rowing ends up not being your thing.
I bought this last time, I had a Echelon sport bike which I loved and still use. I see all the comments about Concept 2 etc but for me seeing if I actually liked rowing for $300 and already using the app was a no brainer.

The general build quality seems good (I have nothing to compare it to, I don't row) however the foot straps seem cheap and this model doesn't have the adjustment on the handle bars like the other Echelon models. I thought that would be an issue stopping and turning the knob for resistance but it wasn't really. You don't change that much during the classes like with the bike.

From a newb who just wants to dip their toe in the water (get it?) I am happy with the purchase and would buy again. Right now I really like rowing, but if I like it still in a year then I can look into more serious options.
You are assuming you can sell the concept 2 for a high price. I see some that have been listed for $750 and have remained at that price for months. Just because you think the value is high doesn't mean the 2nd hand buyers will. In 5 years if they are still using it they would have gotten a lot of value from $300. In 5 years i highly doubt the concept2 Would be worth $750.

Good machine. This thing is $300 though. Fiddling with add on apps is really annoying. Concept2 is gonna get lapped as everyone else builds all in one solutions.

I'd like to add on to the previous commenter as well... Yes, this is only $300 however, you will not be able to get parts for it if any parts break after a few years most likely so it is a short term purchase. and if you sell it in 5 years you may get $100 for it... If you buy a Concept 2, it stores vertically, is super solid, and you can sell it in a day for $750 all day long because everyone wants a used Concept 2, they are that good. AND you can get parts for these forever. The company will sell or send you any parts needed and they have for all their old machines as well and they have been making them for over 30 years. I've tried these cheap ones, and they are not confidence inspiring to use. That's why gyms buy the Concept 2. However I will say that rowing is an EXCELLENT full body workout and however you choose, just do it on whatever machine you have because your health will benefit! Smilie
I have the Concept 2 and the SkiErg and both are amazing complimentary movements.

Just asking. Currently $990 where? I'm seeing $1300-$1600 for models D&E.

Hey, buy the cheap one and get to it! Those sitting on the market could be older models over 10 yrs old, they've been making them for 30+ years..
