I'm only a sample size of 1, but they've been reliable for me. Not my fastest drives and uses an older Silicon Motion controller, which isn't necessarily bad - it's a controller that's been around a long time. Just not the fastest in the world. This drive also has TLC vs QLC flash (you usually see the latter on budget drives)
I have one of their RGB drives for my MacBook (older intel) and it runs great been over 4 years zero issues. I just purchased this one and put an enclosure on it to use for my tesla. I know it's overkill but at least the endurance piece is there instead of microSD cards that can fail
Usually, but not always. SSD controller's primary use of DRAM is to speed up operations by storing a map of where the data is stored on the NAND. When an SSD does not have DRAM on the controller package, it will use a portion of the NAND to store this data (slower) or use a process called Host Memory Bus (HMB) if it is a PCIe based SSD in which case it will use a small portion of the system memory to store the information (faster).
SLC caching is a technique to help speed up writes by setting a small portion of the NAND to operate in SLC (single bit) mode. As data needs to be written, the controller will store this data in that cache until it can be written to the TLC. This can really accelerate sequential writes, at least until the SLC cache space is full.
You can have an SSD with both DRAM and SLC caching (Silcon Power's UD70 is an example), but it is far more common to see it on budget SSD's that use a DRAM-less controller, which this is. This SSD uses a quality Silicon Motion SM2259 XT controller and 128-layer Hynix TLC NAND. For a good price, this is a solid budget SSD for general storage needs, IMO.
Definitely one of the better 2.5 SSD drive posted. The SM2259XT is a revision of the SM2258XT and no trouble some knowledge so far. Compare to prior posted 1TB PNY CS900 drive with satafirm phison s11 error this one is better by a mile.
