No experience with 3rd gen AirPods but having owned 1st and 2nd gen "basic" AirPods, as well, as first gen AirPods Pro, I think I'd prefer the 1st gen Pros they currently have for $129.

the pro with its air tips gives me an uncomfortable "under water" feeling. the gen3 slight redesign provides greater audio then the previous gen 1 and 2. if you need/want noise cancelling, the pro is the way to go.
