The roku version does not seem to support playback from the SD card in the App:

That is probably a deal breaker unless you want to pay for their yearly subscription.

Yes, from what I've read though they aren't compatible with each other's app.

Apparently their respective apps require whitelisted MACs, so you can't cross-flash them.

Companies have to go where labor is cheaper. We live in a world here in America where high school dropout handymen think they are doctors and deserve $50-$75 an hour. 🤷 ♂️

You can try try to price match the 2-pack Wyze deal with Best Buy. On my end at least, it shows that it is available for delivery but for a $35 delivery fee. Depending on your Best Buy rep, this may be enough to have them honor a price match.

Haha I did not even notice the Roku part. My mind went straight to "oh more clearances on the older V3 Wyze cameras..." Smilie

I stay away from Wyze now that they took away the free notification clip. Yi Home (is that the same as xiaomi?) short clip notification is still free.

When did they take it away?

No, Wyze used Roku Camera's design aspect...
Actually Roku had plan to jump into camera market since first launch of Roku TV 🤣.
Wyze just jumped ahead of them...

Chinese manufacturers give not damn about IPs. You ask them to make counterfeit of anything, they would happily do it...
I doubt that. Many SDers here have used wyze cams for many years and roku never entered the security cam market until now.
In US, it is easy to sue on the IP related case. Why Roku not go after wyze?

I don't think it's a rebrand of Wyze but a rebrand of Hualai, the company who actually makes these. I think most if not all of Wyze products are Chinese rebrands and Wyze (plus other resellers) builds out the software that runs on top. I think that's how they keep costs low and churn out new products so frequently.

lol, wyze never made or manufactured anything that they sell. it's all rebranded 3rd party stuff. they are basically the middle man.

so it's not that roku is getting their stuff from wyze, it's roku getting their stuff directly from the original manufacture. if you know who the manufacture was you could go get your own identical camera from them too, you will have to put in a very large order and they will do it. this is not news buy the way.

All I want to know is which home WiFi cameras allow you to bypass the "cloud", record to an internal MicroSD card AND then view live and recorded video from a phone, PC app or browser-based app WITHOUT having to pay for a subscription.

My Vimtag indoor/outdoor camera allows all this, albeit with a clunky PC app and I haven't been able to copy the footage on the MicroSD card directly to my PC as the card uses either some funky format or encodes it in a way that I haven't been able to decrypt, seemingly the way that Truecrypt/Veracrypt do. I can copy over WiFi, but it's painfully slow and seems kind of stupid if I have access to the card itself.

My Wyze allows me to view footage on my phone or tablet, for free, but I have to pay extra each month to see it in a crappy browser-based app, and I haven't found a standalone PC app. It does, though, allow me to view or copy the card contents directly on my PC as it uses a standard formatting method and doesn't encrypt the contents. I've read that there are 3rd party PC apps that work with it but I haven't looked into it.

My view is, if I pay for the camera and put a card in it, I shouldn't have to pay anyone to see its live or recorded footage, and should be able to view these on my phone, tablet or PC, with a robust app that allows FF, RW & pause and all that. I'm willing to pay extra for a decent such app.

Camera makers are trying to apply the razor/blades model to cameras. But that makes no sense as there's nothing that wears out or needs replacement.

That is certainly a blight in our country, but I don't think it excuses corporate reliance on foreign slave labor either.

Can you site your source on this one? Usually a white labeled product isn't rewritten from the ground up for another company to use with all the bugs worked out and military grade encryption added. It can happen, but rarely does. I'm not sure this would qualify as a case to do that.
yea here is the reference:

https://www.wired.com/story/roku-...ober-2022/
"The Roku Smart Home app includes data encryption and two-factor authentication (although we think it's worth noting here that Wyze left a security breach unfixed and unannounced for three years until earlier this year)"

Roku used Wyze hardware (which wyze just used a 3rd party OEM to make anyhow). Roku remade the entire software package (app/roku connectivity/encryption) to work with the hardware and firmware. I had bought the wyze a long while back and stopped using it and now use the Roku cameras, there is a difference and I'd recommend the Roku - their software is superior but out of the box they don't have all of the wyze functionality which really isn't a big deal since the main functions work fine.

Two business people who both used to work at Amazon now work at Roku and wyze. Thought its a genius idea when they reconnect. - I'm making it up. But I'd like to believe there's a high chance it's how it went down.

The Wyze 3 cameras are good with good night vision. But still very difficult to clearly make out the faces of people / number plates recorded on them. May require a 2k or 4K camera.

Any recommendations on such cameras which are reasonably priced?
Your $20-$25 camera will not be able to make out license plate. Their field of vision is too wide. You need something that can zoom in closely to the street or area of interest. Also, you will need a camera that can be manually adjusted so that the camera shutter can be set to between 1/1000 or 1/2000. These type of IP camera are typically in the range of $150 to $250.

Here is one from Amazon [amazon.com] which the picture below is captured with. BTW, this one is "only" 2MP. Typically day time capturing just need something that is zoomed in. Night time takes some adjusting to make it work right. Note that the night time capturing is tuned to see the license plate only. You actually need another camera to see the overall vehicle.
