Using this will go one of two ways.
A: It'll get used once and never touched again.
B: You'll suddenly have no money from buying new scopes and parts.

With this scope you'll get a closer look at the moon and that's about it, especially if you live in a city. If you get it priority 1 will be replacing the tripod.
She shouldn't thank me yet...

Take the money from this and put it towards a set of 10x50 binoculars. Or look on ebay for a Meade Adventure Scope 80 / Orion ct80. These scopes are enough to make out some deep space objects and get a look at planets. The planets will be small but you can make out some detail with the right eyepiece.
I would like to give you a thumbs down for your comment because I want to buy this.. But, I am 53 years old and my experience in life and my past impulse purchases tells me that you are ABSOLUTELY correct.. My wife thanks you for helping me to save the money .. Repped

Is this better suited for downtown views or can you actually make out the rings of Saturn?

It's gotten a lot of positive comments and folks are saying that you can see Jupiter and Saturn, but are we talking just a bit bigger than with the naked eye or decent binoculars, or colors, rings and moons?

Can this be retrofitted onto a camera tripod with the standard center screw and quick release "spike" mount?

The dovetail mount on it should have a 1/4-20 screw hole. This will let you put it on pretty much any tripod.

Thanks. I have an old Bogen that's pretty stable and smooth. Of course it's not meant to be used for serious telescope use but at least it doesn't shake. But IIRC you can install all sorts of "heads" (or whatever they're called, it's been a while) to convert it for various uses, so maybe there are some that are suited for telescope use.

Let's face it. With most scopes you end up with the moon and some fuzzy dots.

This seems like a great deal for your young kiddo that you're trying to find out what he/she is interested in. If they're not interested in celestial bodies or the body of that milf down the road, then no big loss.

The fact of the matter is that telescopes in this price range are going to be disappointing. If you just want to play around with it a little and see what it will do, the good news is you are only out $40. If your kids (or you!) love it to death, It could be the start of a fascinating and potentially very expensive hobby. Just wait until they want to get into astrophotography! 💸💸💸

True. Spend orders of magnitude more on astrophotography gear, or just go look on astrobin.
