Yep! Some manufacturers set aside a portion of the flash NAND that will be unusable except for the controller. Overprovisioning allows the controller to have some space to use during writes. This helps reduce write amplification and improves write endurance (to a point) at the cost of some lost capacity. Most newer controllers can use existing free space for these purposes without needing the overprovisioning.

This is a bigger factor in the enterprise space where you are getting lots of continuous I/O, than it is in the consumer space where there is more idle time for the controller to do some house cleaning (garbage collection) as required.
I'm ready for $150 4TB SSDs. Hard to justify spinning disks except for larger storage and backups.

Hot price. Is there a reason this is a weird 1.92T instead of 2T like others? because other manufacuterers round up?

So which is a better drive, this or the Patriot P210? Both 2tb.

From what I understand, they both use the same SMI SM2259XT controller and Micron TLC NAND. So it really comes down to price per GB. Either one is a good choice for a budget general use SATA SSD.

This burst elite is QLC, Patriot P210 is $30 more and doesn't list any specific nand so might be QLC or TLC but assume the worst due to no listing.

Both using the SMI SM2259XT controller. Pretty decent price for 2TB but would had been better if it was TLC.

How is this compared to an mx500? I bought a 1 TB version for my son's computer for $75, but this is tempting for twice the storage. He already has an m.2 for his boot drive so this is just additional storage on a gaming laptop.

Fine for storage drive, the MX500 (Dram, TLC, and better controller) is a better drive performance wise. Just the know patriot is a QLC will have less life expectancy than TLC but should outlast any consumer level lifetime usage.
