From experience - An oscillating tool moves side to side and sands much more aggressively. I would avoid using it to do any sort of finish sanding or anything you are going to look at. Orbital/detail sanders are much much more precise, less aggressive, and instead of moving side to side, they orbit/twist.

Good point. Forgot this is oscillating not just a vibrating mess.

I'm not woodworker but prefer the side to side ones because when dealing with wood grain I don't want to go against it and orbital ones do the "circles" scratches which are visible after the stain. Maybe I should have went to smaller grit sandpaper afterwards but it's what I noticed on my projects.

If they have the kit at your local store, have someone scan it. Odds are it will scan at $99 regardless of what is marked on the shelf. This happens a lot with this kind of stuff at HD
