It's also worth noting that there have been 3070s at about this price point or for a little more: https://slickdeals.net/share/android_app/fp/783742

If your son is small, I would recommend getting a gaming desktop since laptops are delicate and easy to break.
EDIT: I forgot to mention that the Microcenter one has a bigger screen so that's a plus but a negative as well for those who value portability and a lighter weight.

Acer Nitro 5 AN517-42-R85S 17.3" Gaming Laptop Computer Platinum Collection - Black; AMD Ryzen 7 6800H 3.2GHz Processor; NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 6GB GDDR6; 16GB DDR5-4800 RAM; 1TB Solid State Drive
If I'm not looking to max out the newest releases, would this be recommended or hold off?
Thank you in advance.

Freezing? This is either a software or hardware issue. Backup your important data to an external hard drive. Use your bootable recovery media on a USB or DVD to format your hard drive and install Windows from new. If it is still freezing, it is a hardware issue, making sense to get a new one. You can continue using it for non-gaming, just install Linux Mint. It is lighter, works with virtually all hardware, and may even work better and quicker.

I've paid $750 for the MUCH weaker 3050 GPU and somewhat weaker i7-11800H CPU last year, so this is a much better deal.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that mine was Dell, for those wondering.
