i love the 8" tablet form factor but the cpu on this is helio p22 with 172 geekbench 5 single core score. not enough for me, even knowing this is not meant to be a powerhouse. ymmv on that.
I have given up on Android tablets.
They never update the OS.
Agree. Only thing that I get android tablets for is emulation. So much easier than using an Apple device. Plus, expandable storage.
Other then that, media consumption and web browsing are the only things androids are good for. People that claim that android tablets are better than android are deluded… Especially with their non-tablet optimized apps and whatnot.

Samsung has raised the bar here. My Samsung tablets consistently get 4-8 updates per year during 2021 and 2022.
That said, the 8" Galaxy Tab A7 Lite is pretty anemic on the horsepower side, but even so Samsung does issue security updates quarterly, and 1 OS update so far (2nd OS update is in beta), at minimum. I know of no other Android tablets that get updated as routinely.
I don't think that there is a fast 8" Android tablet.

I've tried non-apple Tablets at various price points and have not been satisfied with the performance of any of them. I've settled on using iPads for the past few years for light office and college work. Although they are a bit more, I've never been concerned with the quality of the item.

It is sad to see that the last 8-inch Android tablets with "premium" specs (a midrange CPU, not necessarily flagship class, more than base RAM, and 1080p screen) were the Samsung TAB S2 8.0 VE from 2016 and the Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 from 2018. Both have given up on that market segment since then and all the decent hardware goes to 10"+ tablets. The recent Fire HD 8 and especially the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite are even infamous for being laggy upon release, thanks to the slow ARM Cortex -A53/A55 CPUs. For casual use and non-CPU intensive tasks like YouTube, they are fine.
The only recent 8" tablet with adequate speed and spec (I wouldn't even say fast) is a used Verizon TCL Tab 9048S circa late-2020. Cortex-A73 CPU, 3GB/32GB, 1200p IPS LCD, Android 10/11. Basically the same hardware performance as the base Fire HD 10 (2021) and the Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 (2018). Any iPad since 2018 like the iPad mini 2019 will blow the doors off these Android tablets. The Apple A10+ CPUs are obscenely fast by comparison.
I've been reading about the huawei mediapad m6 8.4. Not really sure when it was released. Don't believe its been released officially in NA, so support might not be great. But the specs seem good and a high resolution screen. I think they are attainable through ebay but last time i looked they were 400+. So it really matters what you want it for.

This. We're still rocking an old S2 8" just because no equivalent tablet was ever released. Everything modern in the 8-9" class is so nerfed. The closest we've found is the Legion Y700, but it's heavy and hasn't officially been released in the US yet.

I should take out my low-end Samsung tablet and see whether there is an update for it.
