I believe these are marketing strategies. They may have a certain target price, which they'll miss if they make it 5.5 lb.
Alternatively, sometimes companies make the weight different to prevent easy and direct mental comparison with the compettiton in their consumers' minds. This is a NeuroMarketing technique commonly practiced by Costco. Next time you go to Costco, find a kirkland product and its close alternative and look at their price signs; one will give price per lb and the other in oz! They do this so you can't simply compare prices and have to do some math , which is paychologically painful and aversive for most people, so they give up and pick whatever product they're cued to pick. Fascinating stuff!

The price is $10.82 per lb. ($0.68 per oz.) which is almost the right price point for being a good deal, especially considering the product quality.

I have never seen this product in-store, but it has gone on sale on Costco website for the same price last year.

These have natural vanilla/cocoa flavors (no artificial flavoring), use sunflower lecithin instead of soy, and are sweetened with stevia. They also use branded protein (Native whey) so it might be indicative of higher accountability and quality control. I have tried the vanilla; it tastes pretty good with moderate sweetness and not overpowering vanilla flavor.

If you'd like to maximize protein per $, the vanilla has +4 servings compared to the chocolate flavor

Product link on Amazon, for reference: (note that the package is 4 oz. smaller on amazon)

Which flavor did you buy? Trying to figure out whether to get vanilla or chocolate.

I use chocolate Vitamin Shoppe Body Tech Pro whey and am just looking for something passable-- not too sweet would be just fine. That one has been fine for me on all fronts.

Thanks and duly noted.

I'm happy w/WPC as I have no problems digesting it. A 75% protein by weight is good to me. Both the Ascent and Whey Tech Pro have this, as well as a similar calorie and fat content. The 110 lbs of Whey Tech Pro I bought last year is a WPI/WPC blend like this one. But the price was $3.26/lb, whereas this is $10.82.

But turns out I'll have to pass on this deal. I've resettled at a $7-$8/lb buy price for whey nowadays and was eager to comment on the post before I did the $/lb calculation.

Wow! 110 lb. Sounds like you get all your protein from whey, and no other foods. How is that working for you?
Now WPC comes out at $8.7 per lb. If you put it on S&S:

Great deal for an excellent clean whey protein. I needed to restock from the last deal. Chocolate flavor tastes great.

I liked it better when they had the Dymatize Hydrolyzed Whey isolate deals at Costco. Anything with whey concentrate doesn't sit well with me and they haven't had any whey isolate in like a year. I noticed this is like the only whey protein they carry at Whole Foods as well, must have bought in to the "native whey" marketing (and the protein powder sections being overtaken by collagen and plant proteins).

They still have the Dymatize and it's currently on sale, but it's gotten so expensive that it doesn't make sense for most to get it, unless they have sepcial needs:
