Growing up I used to take the train from Miami to Philly and visa versa. I hadn't done it in years so when I went on a cruise, we took the train back.
It was the worst experience I have ever had.
Out of 6 bathrooms (2 per car, the car ahead, our car and the one behind us), only one was working and that one had urine, feces, and blood all over it. By the time we got to Philly, they didn't even have toilet paper. I complained and was told it would be cleaned once the trip was over. There were no other bathrooms that we could use. Just the one disgusting bathroom. The staff was rude. The food sucked. They ran out of ice and only served warm soda or water.
I complained to Amtrak and they gave me a $20 voucher to be used within 30 days.

Never again!

USA Rail Pass

Pass valid for coach class on any US Amtrak routes. Pass is valid for 120 days after purchase (30 days after first segment is traveled).

I used this last year and did a cross country trip from East to West coast with the family. Fantastic deal if you want to see parts of the country you normally can't or are maybe moving cross country and need to bring extra luggage. The only downside is that it's coach but I find it much more spacious and comfortable than riding on a bus, car, or plane.

Keep in mind that transfers count as a ride/segment.

wow this looked like a great deal to me until I realized I have to take at least 5 rounds trips in 30 days... I mean, if I worked 5 hours away and had to commute this might be interesting... otherwise I have no idea how this is valuable.

Yes, though each customer must purchase their own rail pass and travel is booked on separate reservations.

If you are traveling with children, purchase a pass for each child and then call 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245). One of our agents would be happy to book your tickets.

the value is in the ability to make several stops during, say one round trip. i.e., Chicago to LA, with stops in KC, Albuquerque, Flagstaff, etc.

I used this deal to do a loop of the US a few years back. If you're smart and can plan well, this is an incredible opportunity to see America.

For that you buy the multi-pass for discounts on regular commuter travel. This is for large trips. I used this and capitalized on each segment as much as I could. You can go from Chicago to Portland for $30. Portland to LA for $30. LA to Phoenix for $30. You get the idea.
