what they mean is that Apple won't have a Lightning port, not that they'll have a USB-C port. When the iPhone 16 comes out (could be 15 but I doubt it) it won't have any ports, which will abide by all laws
Good point.

Are they usually ignore capacity for trade ins as in 128GB gets same credit than 512GB? At which point buying lowest would be best due to lowest retail but same trade in value.
That is correct, what I did last year is sell my higher storage mind condition phone. I bought a refurb 128gb model used it for few weeks while I waited for my S21U and traded that in the refurb. A bit of hassle but ended up making out pretty well in the end.

Looks like they are still not showing details on the trade in value of the Pixel 6 Pro. if they don't by the time the s23 is released it's going top be hard to justify switching if I have to pay full price and hope to sell the Pixel separately

Sorry if this is a noob comment - I've never purchased a new phone right at release but I'm holding on to a S9+ with declining battery life (otherwise works fine) and feel like maybe it's time to upgrade. Everyone talks about trade-ins at release but clearly my phone won't get me much. Based on other comments, I think I get that this is just an additional credit on top of any pre-release/release bonus offers. What are the pre-release/release offers usually like in the past (as I clearly haven't looked before - when I bought the S9+ it was mid-end of the year because my Note 3 kicked the bucket on a cross-country move).

I guess long story short - is it worth buying at pre-release/release if trade-in is not a factor vs waiting a few months? The other random factor is baby #2 arrives in March and I was thinking I'd probably want a better camera Smilie) Also, I'm sure the jump from a S9+ to S23U will be a significant improvement regardless (except for losing external storage/headphone jack)! Sorry for the long post - thanks in advance!

In the past you could net good deals not too many months after release, but without the Samsung credit or pre order goodies for instance. It seems though that for the last 1-2 releases prices have barely come down especially for the Ultras so if you plan to step up to the most expensive model in the series you may be waiting a while after release before you see any other deals even close to aggressive as pre order. Samsung definitely likes to put people on the spot and suffer from FOMO.

I will say do it. At least for privacy and reliability reasons. There is no niche for Samsung in the hardware side outside of the screen. I like iPhone's battery longevity. Of course, IOS is preferred for privacy reasons (esp. with advanced data encryption). P.S: I'm still rocking Note 20G ultra and 13 pro max. Will eventually start carrying just the iPhone when Note hits the dust.
Definitely lost, no company cares about your privacy. Your encryption is pointless when the feds have backdoor access. If you're wanted enough Apple will happily give them the keys. Also CSAM, which supposedly has been "killed". Also VPNS do nothing. If you're using a modern digital device connected to the internet, expect 0 privacy.

Great point. Do you have any idea about the price in last 1-2 releases? For example, we can get S22 Ultra from Google Fi for $599+a few month Fi usage cost. If considering trade-in a S21 Ultra, it will be about $200 in total. So if the release price of S23 Ultra is in $200-$300 range with trade-in of a S22 Ultra, can we say it is a good deal and better to get it than wait?

Batterylife has to improve. s22 ultra was horrible. And now that we tend to have watch, buds, cars (if you have tesla), etc always connected, battery drains pretty fast, especially you take meetings on the phone on zoom or teams. Battery life is certainly one thing I am hoping will significantly improve.
I'm certainly for battery life improvements but with usage like that, you have so many opportunities to charge it.
For example, if it's connected to your car long enough to significant drain your battery, why don't you charge it at the same time? Same with meetings. With all the improvements in charging capability that people clamored for, like wireless, it feels like people actively avoid charging their phone. I mean I get it, it's not great to be tied down to a cord or a wireless charger but in a lot of cases, there's no real inconvenience.

Of course I charge it on the go. But my comment was compared to s21 ultra , same usage I used to get a full days usage , only charge when I go to bed. With this one , it clearly regressed with same usage. With newer releases i expect battery life to improve ( for same usage ). I do agree that phones are used to do a lot more these days and so you can't expect magic. But same to same usage , the next version of phone should be better or at least the same , not regress in battery life.

If credits remain the same , typically , release time is the best time to get it. Y will be like a 700 trade-in for s21 ultra and may be 800 for s22 ultra , 200 credit , may be a freebie( discount) like buds or something like that. That might bring your s23ultra to 400 + tax and you get to use credit on a watch or buds etc. You will have to wait well after that, may be thanksgiving for an equivalent deal. That's typically the case. But once in a while you will see some enhanced trade-in here and there with employee and student discount , without credit that many people find better than a credit.

Want to move on from flip 4 the gaming experience is terrible with huge borders on sides. Could get it to "fit" but chops off important stuff.

Sign up for the $50 credit, why not, it is a no brainer! If you don't like the other offers once announced, don't buy. Being proactive on this offer gets you a free case, or really cheap buds.

Also, getting the freebies with trade-in or heavily discounted watch/buds on the pre-order is also totally reasonable. Could there be better deals in 2-6 months, sure, but if you have any selling savvy, you should ultimately make money on trading-in your old 21/22/z's...
