In 2003 I had been a TurboTax user for several years and it became known that that version of TT wrote to the boot sector of the hard disk for DRM, but TT didn't say anything about it and it actually rendered some computers unbootable after installation, not to mention they had no business at all in my boot sector. It was shady. I switched to Tax Cut and never looked back. Granted, 20 years is a long time to hold a grudge but Tax Cut hasn't given me a reason to reconsider, it works fine.

Prior to 2019 TT hid their free filing webpage from search engine results and steered eligible filers to their paid software, so honestly, they keep giving me reasons not to give them a second chance.

The best prices come mid february to late march not the holidays. Last two years I paid $15 for deluxe plus state.

Having used both, H&R Block is much easier to use, particularly the interview. If you like and use the interview method, H&R Block is the clear winner.

Regarding accuracy, for simpler returns either is probably fine. TT has known issues with form 1116 and does not complete it correctly, while Block does. For more complex returns, rentals, limited partnerships, and foreign taxes, Block is much better. In addition, Block has free audit support. TT is now owned by Intuit, so that is another reason to prefer Block to avoid Intuit's predatory practices.

Can I file for 3 separate people with this software? One married, two single. I need to file fed, state and New York City tax. I'm a complete newbie lol, any advise is appreciated! Should I buy three premiums? I have investment income and crypto income too

It includes a state DOWNLOAD, not a state e-filing. Got caught on that the past few times I bought it. You can print and mail the state return for free though. The cost to efile was kinda expensive I think ($15-$25 if I recall)

You can create as many returns as you like with just 1 copy. You only get 5 free federal e-files however.

Sold a bunch of crypto, my house, and bought a house last year as well as a 401k withdrawal (not loan, it was taxed).

I'm thinking this might be my most complex tax season ever. Would you recommend HR over TT? I've been using TaxAct and plan to switch off it this year.

Is H&R Block any better than Credit Karma (Cash App), which is free? Married filing jointly, homeowner and standard investments (401k, 403b, 529 plan for kids), nothing crazy. Is it worth buying this over using Credit Karma?

You are making me confused. Forget efile for now. You can by any of the versions listed as just federal or you can buy it as federal with state. If you buy federal with state, you get the ability to create both federal and state returns. You then do your return for both federal and state. You can do as many returns as you like for both federal and state. You could do your whole family if you like. Now you have to get those returns filed and submitted to the agency that handles it. You can do that either on paper by printing and mailing it in or by e-filing. If you are just doing yours, you can use one of the five federal e-files included to submit your federal return, but you get no e-files for state and will have to purchase one if you want to e-file. You get no state e-files and the only way to file your state taxes without paying more is to print and mail it. That is what I do and what I think most others do. You can purchase a state e-file option, but it cost $20.nore.

What do you do if you work in New York live in New Jersey? That requires more than one state right? That seems to be the most expensive thing to add
