If anyone is interested in hard numbers to figure out how much less expensive it is now compared to Tesla's best deal of 2022 - $7,500 discount with 10,000 free Supercharger miles - I bought a Tesla Model Y Long Range 7-Seater with white interior in late December 2022.

Excluding taxes and fees, I paid $63,940. It's now $59,630, which is $4,310 less, and it is eligible for the $7,500 tax credit. That means if I didn't buy it in December and bought it today, I would have saved $11,810 + sales tax, so a bit over $12,000 in savings I missed. (I got 10,000 Supercharger miles, which is worth somewhere between $500 and $1,000.) With taxes and fees, I paid $71,578.55 in total.

Tesla plans to add a new radar product to its vehicles in mid-January, according to documents posted with the Federal Communications Commission.

The disclosure, which was first reported by Electrek, comes as the company faces scrutiny over the safety and capabilities of its standard advanced driver assistance system known as Autopilot and the $15,000 optional upgraded product branded as "Full Self-Driving." Tesla FSD beta software offers some automated driving features but is not a self-driving system.

The luxury EV-maker has long claimed it could reach full autonomy through a "vision only" approach that shuns other sensors like lidar and radar in favor of cameras and a deep neural network that quickly processes a vehicle's surroundings and responds in real time. Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously promised to "solve" full self-driving by the end of this year (he's also promised Tesla would get there every year for roughly nine years now). He has recently admitted the problem will take longer to solve.

And perhaps, as every other autonomous vehicle technologist says, it's not actually achievable yet through cameras alone.

The company began removing radar from its vehicles last May. In October, Tesla removed its 12 ultrasonic sensors from Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built for North America, Europe, the Middle East and Taiwan. Ultrasonic sensors measure distance via ultrasonic waves and are used as proximity sensors to support anti-collision safety systems, particularly in parking use cases.

Now it appears radar is back. It's not yet clear which models will get the new radar. The type of radar Tesla intends to market next year is of a frequency that's allocated by the FCC for ADAS use cases, according to Ram Machness, chief business officer at Arbe Robotics, which produces ultra-high-resolution 4D imaging radar.

Tesla had originally filed with the FCC to use the new radar — which is described in filings as "76-77 GHz Automotive Radar" — in its vehicles back in June.

"From the frequency of operation (76-77GHz) as well as the mechanical design of the sensor from Tesla's FCC filing, it appears that this radar would be utilized in ADAS applications," Steven Hong, VP and general manager of radar technology at semiconductor company Ambarella, told TechCrunch.

He noted that while the performance of this "edge" radar sensor will be limited, it's a positive development that Tesla is looking to add radar to its perception stack for safety-critical, robust performance.

Earlier this year, the FCC had granted a confidential treatment to Tesla in order to keep the details of the new radar under wraps. Late last month, Tesla applied to extend that confidentiality treatment another 60 days from its date of expiration, which is December 7.

There are actually several improvements from a '20 to a '22/'23. Some are functional, some are cosmetic. For example:
  • 75kWh battery to 82kWh (improved range and 0-60 time)
  • Intel Atom (MCU2) to AMD Ryzen (MCU3) - much faster/responsive main screen, now includes Zoom app
  • resistive heating system vs. heat pump
  • standard headlights vs. new Matrix-style
  • new tail lights/rear turn signals
  • new cameras ('23 only, TBD on functional improvements)
  • powered trunk
  • new/improved interior center console with USB-C, USB-C for rear passengers
  • wireless charging for front passengers
  • new front door trim with wood, better plastics and lighted door pocket
  • double-paned front door glass for less road noise
  • heated steering wheel
  • new wheels
  • exterior chrome trim vs. satin black (I much prefer the black)
  • Improved front fender cameras, no more camera-sensor-blinded-by-flashing-indicator-at-night
  • CCS charging compatible
  • Overall less squeaks and rattles. I dunno what 'under the hood' changes they made in the past three years, but the car feels better put together.

Thank you. While those aren't worth it to me (we have a 2018 3), at least it provides perspective and I can understand how that would be very important to some folks.

If anyone wonders "what, that's not worth it to you?!?", I'm replacing my 2013 S with the Y. She drives the 2018 3 so little that it is still at 13k miles. Hence why for us, it's just not worth replacing the 3. We are an outlier though.

I think you'll be shocked how much improved a new Y is over your S, and even your 3. Smilie

One month ago when I made the decision, there was no hint or guarantee that the M3P would ever qualify for a tax credit (even now, only certain configs do). And there was certainly no guarantee of a price cut going forward in '23.

So, with the $7500 Tesla reduction, decent trade-in price (trade-ins crashed in Jan) and 10K super-charger credits, that late Dec '22 offer was about the best I could reasonably expect.

I love new tech. And the faster Ryzen is something I can appreciate every day. Along with the less rattles.

Even if you think about a 10 minute trip to the store, a slowish UI and a rattly car are enough to annoy almost anyone. Not saying that's the best use of several thousand dollars... rather the improvements of a '20 vs. a '23 are noticeable enough to me to appreciate on every trip I take. Basically all the things I loved about the '20, plus improvements to eliminate the small gripes I had. Perfect car? Maybe!

I hear ya. There's nothing wrong with my S, but Yolo! I drive enough miles that certain comforts are well appreciated.
